Swoosh

Page 1 of 10 The winter Olympics were approaching when I designed this pattern and the gracefulness and freedom of skiers swooshing down mountain slopes influenced this design. The pattern is an exciting study in contrasts: long, lean, straight lines surround a swirly, swoopy fleur de lei, and the dark, moody, green main color yarn contrasts with the light, bright pink.

Afterthought thumb (also known as Traditional Norse Thumb):

This mitten pattern utilizes an afterthought thumb. To make this thumb, the thumb stitches are first worked using waste yarn, then they are transferred back to the left needle and worked again, using MC and CC in the pattern as charted. After finishing the hand portion of the mitten, the waste yarn is removed and the resulting live stitches are placed onto the needles (you may prefer to place the stitches on the needles before removing the waste yarn). The thumb is then worked from these stitches.

Hand:

Switch to larger needle size and begin working chart from bottom right row to left, working up the chart. There is one chart for the Left Hand Mitten and a second chart for the Right Hand Mitten. NOTE: the chart for the Left Hand Mitten has a mistake in it - the dark line in the middle of the chart should beTWOdark lines, not justone! Note that on the first row of the chart you will increase from 48 stitches to 58 stitches. When you get to the red line drawn into the chart for thumb placement, switch to scrap yarn to knit those stitches, then slide those stitches back onto the left needle and knit them again in pattern using your working yarns, following the chart. Work tip of mitten decreasing as charted. When all rounds of the chart have been knit 7 stitches remain on mitten palm and 7 stitches remain on mitten back. Graft these stitches together. Knitty.com has a great tutorial on grafting. All pattern elements, written and graphic, copyright Jana Van Wyk, 2010. Pattern is for not-for-profit use only. Finish Thumb:

Remove scrap yarn and place resulting live stitches on needles. Pick up 4 extra stitches on each side of the lower and upper sets of stitches, as charted. You will have 30 stitches. Knit the thumb following thumb chart. Graft remaining stitches. Repeat to make second mitten.

FINISHING:

Weave in ends. Before blocking soak mittens for an hour. If you are using hand dyed yarn, soak in 3 cups water with 12 cup vinegar to prevent the dye from bleeding. Block and lay flat to dry. Enjoy The winter Olympics were approaching when I designed this pattern and the gracefulness and freedom of skiers swooshing down mountain slopes influenced this design. The pattern is an exciting study in contrasts: long, lean, straight lines surround a swirly, swoopy fleur de lei, and the dark, moody, green main color yarn contrasts with the light, bright pink. and admire your creation! You earned it!
