ROSE-OF-SHARON HAT & PURSE
Ruffles and lace: they just seem to go together. Why not a lacy hat with a ruffled brim? Rose-of Sharon uses a modified version of “Feather Lace Ruffe,”" from Nicky Epstein's book Knitting on the Edge. This lace pattern is wonderful for circular knitting, because the “jog” that occurs at the end of every round is hidden. It's also a great pattern for a beginning lace knitter, because the eyelet holes and alternating or "feathered" decreases line up in such a way that you can easily check your work for errors. I took pains while designing the crown decreases to continue the eyelet detail and the featheed effect all the way to the top, for a charming birds-eye view. Although this hat is undeniably girlish, it's too fattering to be limited to children!

The purse is NOT simply a lengthened, upside-down version of the hat: it is worked from the bottom up, so that the stitch pattern goes in the same direction as the hat, and then an I-cord drawstring tie is added. As for the name, if you have ever been to Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, or Cape Cod in July or August, you've probably seen the Rose-ofSharon, a shrub which is covered with ruffle-edged fowers for weeks during the height of summer. FINISHING
HAT: Work in ends. (Optional) Thread ribbon through row of eyelet holes just above ruffle so that longer sections of ribbon appear on RS; put hat on before tying bow, to ensure ribbon is not too tight. PURSE: Work in ends. Work I-cord to length of approx 30"and leave last 2 sts on holder. Using small eyelets created by ruffle increases (in center of solid “feathered" columns) IN ADDITION to eyelet holes just below ruffe, thread I-cord so that longer sections of I-cord appear on RS, and leaving long loop on side of bag opposite free ends of cord. Unravel cast on end of I-cord and graft to live sts on opposite end. Pull on long loop and on loop created by grafting ends to close bag. @ANGELA HAHN 2O08 ALL RIGHTS RESERVEDKNITITUDE@GMAIL.COM WWW.KNITITUDE.COM
