Misfit Socks
Sarah House

The socks are first knit horizontally around the cuff then stitches are picked up for the leg and foot. I used my favorite short row heel, but it's easy to substitute any heel and toe you like as well as adjusting the stitch count of the leg to fit any foot. I made them short so that the cable rests at the narrowest point of the ankle, but they would look great with the cuff peeking out of the top of boots. Please adjust them however you need to make them perfect for you.

Pick up the first row of stitches and remove waste yarn from the provisional cast on. Graft two ends of cuff together. I suggest Kitchner, but a three needle bind off with RS facing wil workalso.
Leg
Pick up and knit each slipped stitch (through both legs) from edge of cuff (approx 36 stitches). You may need to pick up an extra on each side of the graft to close any gaps. In next row increase, evenly around leg, the total number of stitches to 52 . Knit 10 rows Rearrange stitches on your needles so that seam of cuff will fall at the back of the heel.
Short Row Heel
Row 1 WS: P 25 stitches. Move the working yarn as if to knit. Slip the last, unworked stitch from the left needle to the right needle. Turn your work. Row 2: Slip the first, unworked, stitch from the left needle to the right needle. Knit the next stitch (you will have wrapped that first stitch around its base with the working yarn) and knit across to the last stitch. Move the working yarn as if to purl and slip last stitch. Turn. Row 3: Slip the first stitch and purl across to the last stitch before the unworked stitch. Wrap and tun. Row 4: Slip the first stitch and knit across to the stitch before the unworked stitch. Wrap and turn. Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until 8 of the heel stitches are wrapped and on left side, 10 stitches are "live" in the middle, and 8 are wrapped and on the right. At this stage, you should be ready to work a wrong side row. Your heel is half done. Now you'll work the second half of the heel: Row 1: Purl across the 10 live stitches across to the first unworked, wrapped stitch. To work this stitch, pick up the wrap and purl it together with the stitch. Wrap the next stitch (so that it now has two wraps) and turn. Row 2: Slip the first (double-wrapped) stitch and knit across to the first unworked, wrapped stitch. Pick up the wrap and knit it together with the stitch. Wrap the next stitch and turn. On subsequent rows you will pick up both wraps and knit or purl them together with the stitch. Continue until you have worked all the stitches and you once again have 26 "live" stitches. You will then continue to working in the round. On the first round you may need to pick up an extra stitch between the heel and top of the foot to close any gap. Remember to decrease back down again in the next round. Foot Continue in the round until foot measures 2" less than desired length. Toe Round 1 (K1, SSK, K to last three stitches, K2tog, K1) repeat Round 2 Knit Repeat Rounds 1 and 2 until there are 20 stitches remaining. Graft toe.
