INSTRUCTIONS
Using provisional cast-on method, cast on 5 sts. Work in garter stitch for 52 rows (5 sts). Do not turn. From the selvedge at the long side, pick up and knit 26 sts, then carefully dissovle the provisional co and incorporate the 5 cast-on sts into your row, which now has all sts combined into one row: 5 from last row worked + 26 picked up + 5 from undone provisional cast-on = 36 sts total. Turn work, slip 1 stitch, k4, p26, k5, turn and continue from Chart A, working the first and last 5 sts of every row as described in box on page 1. Repeat Rows 11 through 20. For the pictured shawl, 9 repeats of Rows 11 - 20 have been worked. The number of sts shown in the gray shaded area will increase accordingly. After the 9" repeat, in Row 110, there should be 346 sts between the two groups of 5 selvedge sts. Increase 2 sts in Row 110, evenly distributed = 5+348+5 sts. For the decorative edge, work from Chart B, 5 selv sts, 29 x pattern repeat width-wise (348 sts), 5 selv sts. Purl all sts in the last WS row (Row 38). Bind off all sts loosely. Using crochet hook, crochet in every bound-off stitch: \*1 sl-st, 1 chain. Repeat from \* to end of row. Break yarn and weave in ends loosely, but don't cut off ends yet. Soak shawl, slightly press out excess water and block shawl. Trim excess tails after the shawl has completely dried.
