Cross Purposes Knitted Six-lnch Square

Cross Purposes is knitted in worsted weight yarn using seed stitches and popcorn stitches to create texture. Instructions for seed stitch and popcorn stitch are provided below. Knit, purl, and stockinette stitches are also used. Both written instructions
Yarn—worsted weight Needles—Size 6 (or size to achieve gauge) Gauge—4.5 stitches and 6 rows equal 1 inch in stockinette stitch.

The odd rows create the right side of the fabric.
Special stitches
The following special stitches are used in this pattern.
Popcorn Stitch
To make a popcorn stitch, indicated by MP in the written instructions, into the designated stitch K1, yf, P1, yb, K1, yf, P1 loosely all in the same st. Knit or purl the rest of the row according to the pattern and turn your work. Knit or purl (purling in this pattern on most rows) back to the first stitch of the popcorn from the previous row, complete popcorn by sl 3 sts as if to purl, P1, yb, then lift the three slipped stitches, one by one, over the knitted stitch, indicated as CP (complete popcorn) in the written instructions and on the chart. It is easier to lift the stitches over the purled stitch with the working yarn in back while moving them. Remember to bring the yarn forward before purling the next stitch.
Seed Stitch
Seed stitch is created by alternating knits and purls in the first row, then knitting the purls and purling the knits as they are presented in following rows. (For example, rows knitted over a cast on of an odd number of stitches K, P, K, P, K every row; or over an even number of stitches, Row 1—K, P, K, P and Row 2—P, K, P, K.)

Instructions
Cast on 25 stitches. Row 1— Beginning with a K st, K 9 sts in seed st, K7, (beg with a K st) K 9 sts in seed st. (Right siderow) Row 2—K 9 sts in seed st, P7, K 9 sts in seed st. Rows 3-10—Repeat rows 1 and 2. Row 11—Right side, K 9 sts in seed st, K3, MP, K3, K 9 in seed st. Row 13— K 9 sts in seed st, K2, MP, K1, MP, K2, K 9 in seed st. Row 14—K 9 sts in seed st, P2, CP, P1, CP, P2, K 9 in seed st. Row 16-- K 9 sts in seed st, P1, CP, P3, CP, P1, K 9 in seed st. Row 17—(Begins the stockinette cross bar section. Slip first stitch on each row through row 24 on purl rows as if to purl, on knit rows as if to knit.) K9, MP, K5, MP, K9. Row 18—P9, CP, P5, CP, P9. Row 19K8, MP, K7, MP, K8. Row 20—P8, CP, P7, CP, P8. Row 21—K7, MP, K9, MP, K7. Row 22—P7, CP, P9, CP, P7. Row 23—K6, MP, K5, MP, K5, MP, K6. Row 24—P6, CP, P5, CP, P5, CP, P6. The next row begins the seed stitch section again. Row 25—K1, P1, K1, P1, K1, MP, K5, MP, K1, MP, K5, MP, K1, P1, K1, P1, K1. Row 26-K 5 sts in seed st, CP, P5, CP, P1, CP, P5, CP, K 5 sts in seed st. Row 27—K6 sts in seed st, MP, K3, MP, K3, MP, K3, MP, (beginning with a P st) P6 sts in seed St. Row 28—K6 sts in seed st, CP, P3, CP, P3, CP, P3, CP, P6 sts in seed st. Row 29—K 8 sts in seed st, MP, K7, MP, (beginning with a P st) P 8 in seed st. Row 30-K 8 sts in seed st, CP, P7, CP, P 8 sts in seed st. Row 31—Repeat row 1. Row 32—Repeat row 2. Repeat these two rows until square measures six inches (about 10 rows). Bind off stitches in pattern. Weave in ends and block as necessary.
Cross Purposes Chart
Cast on 25 stitches and begin working at the lower right corner. Stitches are indicated by the following symbols: 口Knit on RS, purl on WS (empty cell) ?Purl on RS, knit on WS ■Make popcorn on RS. Note: complete popcorn (CP) st on wrong side is charted (CP) and should be worked as indicated in written instructions. Slip the first st according to row direction: on purl rows as if to purl, on knit rows as if to knit.
