Elwha Hat (Worsted)
The Elwha River is a 45-mile (72 km) river on the Olympic Peninsula in the U.S. state of Washington. From its source at Elwha snowfinger in the Olympic Range of Olympic National Park, it flows generally north to the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Most of the river is in Olympic National Park. The river is the site of the largest dam removal project in history. My friend Tim, who this hat was designed for, has a great love for the Elwha River. Instructions:
Brim: Cast On (108, 120, 132,) stitches and join for working in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches. Place marker at the join to note the beginning of round. Knit 2, purl 2 for (2.5, 3, 3.5) inches. This wide brim is for turning back and completely covering the ears to make for a very warm hat. Hat: Knit every stitch on the next two rounds, this gives a nice line for folding the brim. Start this round with a knit 10 stitches, purl 2 stitches. The purl 2 stitches should come directly above purl two stitches. Continue in pattern: k 10, p2 for (6, 6.5, 7) inches from start of this pattern sequence. Then start the decreases for the crown section.

Finishing:
Remove the stitch marker and cut the yarn, leaving a 5 inch tail of yarn. Thread the tail of yarn on a tapestry needle and starting with the next stitch pull the needle through the remaining stitches as you release each stitch from the needle. Now all the stitches are offthe needles. Pull the yarn tight, weaving the yarn up and down through at least half the circle of stitches and then pulling the yarn through to the inside of the hat and securing the loose end. Now go back and weave in the cast on piece of yarn.
