An extralong garter tab creates a central panel of easy lace (the popular Shetland Razor Shell pattern which is worked over 2 rows only) that widens the otherwise basic triangle top down shape. The lateral wings are worked in garter stitch for maximum warmth with a tall lace border. This shawl is an ideal pattern for the lace beginners and impatiant knitters, with its easy stitching and thickish yarn, but still interesting for the more experienced thanks to an unusual but straightforward shaping and varied instructions.

●Indio, 100% wool, 50 g (1,7 oz), 150 m (164 yds), col. 70; 4 balls.

● Needle size 5 mm (US 8), one circular at least 80 cm (32") long. · 2 stitch markers. · Scissors and tapestry needle. · Pins and blocking wires.

Measures

●Length: 57 cm (22 12"). ·Width: 150 cm (59"). Gauge: 15 sts and 32 rows = 10 cm (4") in g st after blocking. One lace motif measures approx 2.5 cm (1"). Exact tension is not essential in this project, but make sure to work loosely enough.

Instructions

Garter tab C.o. 8 sts using long tail c.o. Work in g st, knitting all sts including the first one, for 47 ridges. Next row: k 8 sts, pm, yo, pm, pick up and knit 47 sts along the long edge of the tab, pm, yo, pm, pick up and knit 8 sts along c.o. edge. Next row: knit back. Mainsection of the shawl Row 1: work 8 sts in Ladder stitch (Chart 1), sm, yo, k1, yo, sm, k3, work in Razor Shell (Chart 2) to 3 sts bef next m, k3, sm, yo, k1, yo, sm, work 8 sts in Ladder stitch. Row 2: work 8 sts in Ladder stitch, k to last m, slipping markers as you come to them, work 8 sts in Ladder stitch. Row 3: work 8 sts in Ladder stitch, sm, yo, k to next m, yo, sm, k3, work in Razor shell to 3 sts bef next m, k3, sm, yo, k to next m, yo, sm, work 8 sts in Ladder stitch. Row 4: work 8 sts in Ladder stitch, k to last m, slipping markers as you come to them, work 8 sts in Ladder stitch. Continue working according ot rows 3 + 4 until you have 75 sts in each of the wing sections and ending with an even row.

Row 5: work 8 sts in Ladder stitch, sm, work to next m following Chart 3 , sm, k 3, work in Razor shell to 3 sts bef next m, k3, sm, work to next m following Chart 3, work 8 sts in Ladder stitch. Row 6: work 8 sts in Ladder stitch, k to last m, slipping markers as you come to them, work 8 sts in Ladder stitch. Work the 12 row repetition of Chart 3 for 2 times, then work rows 1-6 once again. Binding off Bind off very loosely as follows. B.o. to M, \*\* RM, yo b.o. Finishing

Wash the shawl in tepid water with a very mild detergent. Squeeze out as much water as possibile without wringing, then lay the shawl flat on a towel, roll up and walk barefoot on the roll to remove as much water as possibile. Pin out to measures using t-pins and blocking wires. Repeat the blocking process each and every time you wash the shawl.
