A popular vintage style scarf and old Icelandic shoe insoles in a rose pattern - these were my inspiration for knitting beautiful but practical scarves for my three girls and myself for next winter. Size: One size, adaptable to any neck length Total length: Approx. 86 cm (34")
Yarn:
MC - 1 ball Kambgarn from Istex (100% new merino wool, 3-ply worsted. 50g balls, approx. 150m) in color of your choice - www.istex.is; also available in Us through Reynolds ("Reynolds Lopi"); CC - remnants of Kambgarn or any similar yarns in 1, 2, 3, or 4 colors - about 10g. of each Notes: These yarns can be replaced by suitable alternatives of similar weight, length and gauge. I hope knitters will make up their own color schemes for the rose patterns, using yarn remnants, just as Icelandic women did when they knitted shoe insoles a long time ago. Needles: 3 12 mm needles (US size 4), 3 mm crochet hook (US 0), stitch holder Gauge: 10 x 10 cm (4" x 4") in garter stitch = 23 sts and 19 garters (38 rows) Techniques: Garter stitch: 1 garter = 2 rows k worked back and forth. Rib: \*k1, p1\* Intarsia: When changing color, new color of yarn is drawn over the yarn that has been used so far. I don't use bobbins since so little of each color is required but you certainly can if you are more comfortable with this process, and/or are unfamiliar with intarsia. Increases and decreases: use any method you please. I used m1 for the increases and for the decreases ssk on the right side and k2tog on the left side. Cast on 4 sts with MC to knitting needles. Knit in garter stitch (knit every row). Increase 1 st on each side in every garter, 13 times (26 rows) = 30 sts. Then knit straight. Simultaneously, begin knitting Rose Pattern in intarsia after 11 garters (22 rows). Follow basic pattern (see chart). When pattern is complete, knit 4 more garters (8 rows), then divide sts in half as follows: place every other st on a stitch holder and knit the 15 remaining sts in rib (k1, p1) for 20 rows, then hold. Put the 15 sts that were set aside on another needle and knit 20 rows in rib (k1, p1). Now put all 30 sts back on one needle, alternating one st from first needle and one st from second needle, etc. Knit straight in garter stitch about 42 cm (16-1/2"), or until desired length of neck is acheived, then begin Rose Pattern. Take care to knit it on the correct side! After 24 garters (48 rows) from beginning of pattern, decrease 1 st on each side in every garter 13 times (26 rows) = 4 sts. Cast off. Crochet an edging around scarf using single crochet, except where the ribbing is. Darn in loose ends.

1 square = 1 st and 1 garter (2 rows) Looking for inspiration?
