I use cotton yarn, Drops You7 and Drops Safran, they are for needles 3mm and 3.5mm but it looks better at 3mm. The downside is that the sole is reduced in size as well, so for the soles make one with a crochet 3mm and if doesn't reach the size you need try with crochet 3.5 mm. My sole is 7cm, for a newborn should be an appropriate size for his first weeks.
