Obviously, the sock pictured above is from the previous election. I don't have time to re-knit it for this election cycle, but I have re-charted the design and updated the instructions below. If you knit them and want to submit a coverworthy photo, I will replace the above with yours and credit you for your work! Size: Women's Medium-Large Men's Medium -Large Materials: For men's or women's sock: 1 ball each of KnitPicks Palette: Celestial, Serrano, and White. One long circular needle, two circular needles, or 5 DPNs, size #2 and #3 (or whatever size gives you the correct gauge working in the round)T Stitchmarkers Tapestryneedle Gauge: 32 stitches and 32 rounds = 4" (Use smaller needles for woman's sock, & same number of sts as men's). Abbreviations: K2TOG= knit 2 stitches together Instructions: Socks are worked top-down. LEG: With circular needle or 5 DPNs (#2 for women's; #3 for men's), CO 72 sts using Celestial. (20 sts on needles 1 and 3 and 16 sts on needles 2 and 4). Join to work in round, placing marker and being careful not to twist stitches. Knit 12-15 rounds 2x2 rib. Follow CHART A, using candidate's name of your choice, and work for 9 rounds. Now begin following CHART B, 1 repeat per round, for a total of 39 rounds. Rearrange sts on this round as you go, setting up for the heel as follows: Heel will be worked over 48 sts on needles 1 and 3: k20 st on needle 1 plus 4 from needle 2. K 12 sts left on needle 2 plus 12 sts on needle 3. Move last 8 sts left on needle 3 to needle 4, and knit them with the 16 sts on needle 4, for 24 sts on needle 4. Needles 1 and 3 have 24 sts each and comprise the 48 heel sts. Needle 2 has 24 sts and contains the instep sts. Needle 3 is not used to knit he heel. Needle 1--24 stsNeedle 2--24 stsNeedle 4--24 sts NOTE: Remember to catch floats every 2 or 3 sts on socks so toes don't get caught in floats. HEEL: My socks feature the Sweet Tomato Heel (STH). You may use the heel of your choice, but I recommend one that does not employ a flap or gussets to allow for an even design flow through the instep. For a tutorial on the STH, see this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IRc3309JUyc Once you understand how to work the STH, proceed with sock. Follow the heel instructions, knitting heel with Celestial. Work three wedges on the 48 sts. Work wedges leaving 9 sts pairs for men's (8 stitch pairs for women's) on each side (12 heel sts left unpaired between pairs for men's and 16 sts unpaired for women's socks). When knitting across instep between 3 wedges, you will knit Celestial and White, beginning with st 25 on the chart and rounds 40, 42 and 44, respectively, keeping true to the pattern as written in the chart. You will be working a complete round between each wedge (rnds 41 and 43.Also, you will have to attach and detach White here and so will have several thread ends to be trimmed and woven in later.) FOOT: Working all sts on circular needle or split evenly on DPNs as with leg, pick up pattern on chart on round 45 and work to round 91, or until desired length of foot minus 1.5". TOE: Using Celestial, decrease for toe as follows: Needle 1: K to last 3 sts of NEEDLE 1, K2TOG, K1 Needle 2: K1, K2TOG, knit remaining sts. Needle 3: K to last 3 stitches of NEEDLE 3, K2TOG, K1 Needle 4: K1, K2TOG, knit remaining sts. Repeat these two rounds until there are 14 sts total on needles 1 and 4 and 14 sts total on needles 2 and 3 (7 sts on each of the 4 needles). Place sts from needles 4 and 1 onto one needle. Place sts from needles 2 and 3 onto one needle. Graft the remaining stitches together using Kitchener st. Finishing: Tie and weave in or trim all color change ends at beginning and ends of rounds. Wash and block to fit. CHART A
