Hiss
Description
Hiss are toe-up socks with a heel flap and gusset. I designed them for my 7-year old boy who is fascinated by snakes. A simple cable goes up the socks, undulating like a snake. They are ideal to use up small leftovers of yarn, as colour A requires little yarn.

About The Designer
Corinne's passion for yarn started around age 8 when she started to knit. Today, she especially loves to design with sock yarn. Although French, she lives in Germany with her English partner and their two boys, where she can fully put her second passion, languages, to the test. Her patterns can be found on Ravelry on the Corinne's Knits designer page or on her blog: corinnesknits.wordpress.com. For pattern support, email: corinnesknits@googlemail.com.

Notes
These socks with gusset and heel flap are knit toe-up, using either the toe up magic cast on1 (my favourite) or the Turkish cast on2. There are other methods out there, feel free to use the one you are most confident with. Both foot and leg lengths can be adjusted according to your needs. Compare pattern size and add foot length before increasing for the gusset. For the leg length, just adjust length before the cuff. The list of abbreviations used in the pattern is available on page4.
Stitch Pattern
The cable used in the pattern is pretty simple. The instructions are both written and charted (see page 5). The heel flap is made in Eye of Partridge Stitch. 1 Knitty's tutorial: http://www.knitty.com/ISSUEspring06/FEATmagiccaston.html 2 A good tutorial: http://fluffyknitterdeb.blogspot.com/2005/10/knitting-made-easier-turkish-cast-on.html

Heel
Keep using colour B, knit top of the foot in pattern. Switch to colour A to knit heel (the top of the foot sts will stay on needle 1 on circ or needles 1 & 2 on DPNs while you work on the heel). Slip the first 8(10,12,12,14,14,15,17) sts of needle 2 on circ or needle 3 on DPNs and use colour A to start working on the heel Row 1: (RS) K15(20,24,26,26,29,31,33) w&t Row 2: (WS) P13(18,22,24,24,27,29,31) w&t Row 3: K11(16,20,22,22,25,27,29) w&t Row 4: P9(14,18,20,20,23,25,27) w&t Row 5: K7(12,16,18,18,21,23,25) w&t Row 6: P5(10,14,16,16,19,21,23) w&t Size 1: skip to row 13 Row 7: K0(8,12,14,14,17,19,21) w&t Row 8: P0(6,10,12,12,15,17,19) w&t Size 2: skip to row 13 Row 9: K0(0,8,10,10,13,15,17) w&t Row 10: P0(0,6,8,8,11,13,15) w&t Sizes 3, 4, 5 & 6: skip to row 13 Row 11: K0(0,0,0,0,0,11,13) w&t Row 12: P0(0,0,0,0,0,9,11)w&t Row 13: K to last st before the 8(10,12,12,14,14,15,17) gusset sts and, at the same time, PU wraps and K tog with st. Leg
Switch back to colour B. Resume knitting in the rd and continue the 17(22,26,28,28,31,33,35)- stitch pattern where you left it. The pattern is now knitted on both sides (so twice the chart on each rd). Continue until total length from heel's short rows is 6.5(7.5,10,12.5,18,20,21,22)cm/2'/(3,4, 5,7,8,81%4,8%)"
