Yarn
600 yards of bulky weight yarn. Yarn used: The Fibre Company Tundra in the Tamarack colorway (60% Baby Alpaca, 30% Merino Wool, 10% Silk, 120 yd/100 grams) 5 skeins. Note: You can easily alter the length of the scarf by simply knitting more or fewer rows. Alter the width by casting on more or fewer stitches, but always have an odd number of stitches.
Needles
U.S. size 9 (5.5mm) or size to attain gauge.
Size
11" across, 36" from top of hood to end of scarf
Gauge
4 stitches and 5 rows per 1" in mock rib pattern on U.s. size 9 (5.5mm) needles
Directions
With U.s. size 9 needles, cast on 45 stitches. Row 1: Knit across all stitches. Row 2: (Knit 1, purl 1) across until 1 stitch remains, knit the last stitch. Repeat these 2 rows until your scarf is the desired length, ending after Row 2. Bind off all stitches knit-wise. You can knit until you run out of yarn, making sure that you have a couple of feet of yarn left after you bind off to sew up the hood. Carefully weave in all ends and either steam or wet block your scarf. With the right sides facing each other, fold the scarf in half (so that it is now half the total length and double-thickness) and measure 11 - 12" down one edge from the fold (depending on how deep you want your hood to be) and pin the two halves together at that point. Using your leftover yarn, carefully sew one set of edges together from the fold to the pin to form the hood. Securely finish the seam at the pin and weave in all ends. Turn your scarf right-side out and enjoy! Wendy D.Johnson 2013 All rights reserved. http://wendyknits.net This pattern is for your personal, non-commercial use only.
