Chunky Ribbed Scarf
By Zoe Deterding
Description
This pattern uses US terminology. The featured scarf (pictured right) was originally made to match a ribbed hat which uses the same yarn and hook size. The pattern for the hat is also available via my Ravelry store. It's easy to alter the width, length and number of ribs in your scarf. You are invited to experiment with different yarns and hook sizes.
Designers Notes
Crochet designers have developed different ways to start scarf patterns and working up the edges between the rows. The end result will often look the same. The most important thing to remember for the crocheter is to be consistent with your stitches.

This pattern will work with most yarn weights and a suitable hook for the yarn you choose, bearing in mind you may end up with a different width or length of scarf compared to the measurements given in this pattern.
Why are two hook sizes needed for this scarf?
It is suggested you use the smaller hook for the foundation chain stitches then use the larger hook for the remainder of the scarf. If you use the same hook size for the whole project, you may find the beginning of the scarf “fans" out slightly. Other scarf designs often have the opposite problem and a bigger hook size would be recommended for the foundation chain. It depends on the stitches used. SKILL LEVEL - advanced beginner

DIRECTIONS
The pattern uses US terminology. You will be using the 7mm hook for the foundation chain stitches then continue with the larger hook for the remainder of the scarf. This pattern will give you a symmetrical scarf - that means you'll start and finish each row with the same type of rib stitch (then the hdc and chaining up between rows). If you have any questions or would like help with calculations for a different number of ribs, please feel free to contact me. This pattern will give you 17 ribs.
Row 1
Using the 7mm hook, make a chain of 18 chain stitches. Swap to the 8mm and make two more chain stitches. You'll now have 20 chain stitches. hdc in the third chain from the hook and hdc in every chain stitch. You'll now have 19 stitches (including the ch3).
Row2
ch2, alternate fpdc and bpdc all the way across, ending on a fpdc then hdc into the top of the ch3. Total of 19 stitches (including the ch2 and hdc).
Row 3
ch2, alternate bpdc and fpdc allthe way across, ending on a bpdc then hdc into the top of the ch2. Total of 19 stitches (including the ch2 and hdc).
Row 4
ch2, alternate fpdc and bpdc all the way across, ending on a fpdc then hdc into the top of the ch2. Total of 19 stitches (including the ch2 and hdc). Repeat Rows 3 and 4 until you have the desired length of scarf.
