This hat is loosely based on the pattern by Alex Tinsley found at: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/worry-hat When I went to knit this pattern, I found that it was to small for an adult head. I also wanted to add a black border to mimic the drawn border for the hat. So, I modified this pattern to make it more to my liking. For those of you not familiar with what a Worry Hat is, this comes from the web comic Questionable Content http://questionablecontent.net/ and is the hat that Marten gives Hanners to help her stop worrying about pretty much everything. Needles: US 6, double pointed or circular per personal preference Gague: 24 stitches, 32 rows per 4 inches. Skills: knitting in the round, decreasing, picking up stitches, wrap and turn Yarns: Light blue for main color of the hat \~ 130 yards worsted weight Black for border \~ 10 yards worsted weight White for pom-pom \~ 10 yards worsted weight CO 110 stitches in black yarn Knit 1x1 ribbing (k1 p1 ribbing) for 3 rows. Change yarns to the blue yarn and work in stockinette for 5 inches
Decreases:
1. (k9, k2tog) repeat around (100 stitches total) 2 and all even until noted otherwise. k all 3. (k8, k2tog) repeat around (90 stitches total) 5. (k7, k2tog) repeat around (80 stitches total) 7. (k6 k2tog) repeat around (70 stitches total) 9. (k5, k2tog) repeat around (60 stitches total) 11. (k4, k2tog) repeat around (50 stitches total) 13. (k3, k2tog) repeat around (40 stitches total) 14. (k2, k2tog) repeat around (30 stitches total) 15. (k1, k2tog) repeat around (20 stitches total) 16. (k2tog) repeat around (10 stitches total) 17. (k2tog) repeat around (5 stitches total) Cut the yarn and draw through the remaining stitches. Pull the yarn tight and weave in the ends.
Afterthought Earflaps:
Choose a spot on the hat, and pick up 20 stitches. Work stockinette for 29 rows, starting and ending with a purl row. (Remember you are now working in the flat.). For the last 4 rows: 30. k2, ssk, k12, k2tog, k2 31. p18 32. k2, ssk, k10, k2tog, k2 33.p16 Don't bind off, instead pick up 16 stitches on each side of the flap (you now have a total of 48 stitches on needles). You will now be knitting perpendicular to the flap. This will be easiest to do if you are using a circular needle around the flap and a dpn. With the circular needle, on the right side of the flap when looking at it on the rs, pick up 3 more stitches from the hat. 1. p2, p2tog (this will purl the last black stitch picked up from the hat and the first blue stitch picked up on the flap together). 2. k3 repeat 1-2 until you have consumed all 16 stitches you picked up from the side of the flap ending on a knit row. At this point you should have 32 stitches left on the circular needle. Turn the corner: c1. pl, w&t c2. k1 c3. p2, p2tog repeat 1-2 again until all 16 stitches at the bottom of the flap are consumed, ending on a knit row. At this point you should have 16 stitches left on the side of the flap. Turn the corner again repeat 1-2 again until all 16 stitches on the side of the flap are consumed, ending on a knit row. Pick up 3 stitches on a dpn from the body of the hat and graft them together with the 3 stitches you just finished. Put the hat on and find where the second ear flap should be. On my hat, I had 24 stitches between them on the back side of the hat. Add the second flap just like the first. Add a white pom-pom and weave in all the ends. Block to make the edges lie flat. Remember to activate the hat by saying “Worry Hat Engage!" Abbreviations: CO - cast on k - knit p - purl k2tog - knit two together ssk - slip slip knit p2tog - purl two together w&t - wrap and turn
