Cony Tutyi

The story of the tutyi

I learnt it from an old woman how to knit the tutyi (slippers). The Cony Tutyi was made based on this narration. Making tutyi is unique, it was made only in Hungary, mainly in the Transdanubian region, mostly in Somogy, Tolna, Baranya and BacsKiskun counties. The Hungarian, the German, the Croatian and the Sokac knew it alike. According to ethnographers, making the tutyi evolved after making the kapca, at least 210- 220 years ago. The terminology of the trade proves this, in which besides Hungarian expressions, German words have remained as well. There are related items, but those are not made from wool but friese or felt. The original tutyi made from 100% wool.

Yarn thickness: DK (Double Knit), Light worsted yarn

4,5 and 5,5 are recommended for this yarn thickness, but this slippers can be made with thinner needle as well. 2,5 mm hook needle is used for the picot. What you need for knitting: For shoe size 38 I used 105 meters of yarn for one pair of tutyi (slippers). Yarn: KUKA magic Wool DeLuxe 100 wool yarn; 100g = 200 meters

HOWTO MAKEIT

HEEL: we start it with 42 stitches with 2 socks needles. We knit the 42 stitches in the following way: 15K, 12 sts rib stitch, 15K. We knit 19 rows this way. This will be the back part of the heel, after this we form the part of the heel which will be on the sole part. We start forming the heel part in row 20 (RS): 15sts, 11sts, we knit stitch 12 and 13 together and turn. We knit till the end of the row. Row 21 (WS): 11P(we take off the first stitch, stitch 10 is reversed), we knit stitch 12 and 13 together purl. We repeat rows 20 and 21 in turn but do not decrease from the middle 12 sts, only decrease the sts from the two side groups. Knit until the stitches run out on both sides and only the middle 12 stitches stay on the needle. SIDES: we take 11-11 stitches on both sides of the piece that is on the needle, these are vertical to the other rows, this ways we'll have 34 stitches. We knit 16 rows (K) with these, working only on the right side!

NOSE: row 17: we start the decreasing (when we arrive at the little toe's base, we Template design: info@redbeedesign.hu can start to decrease). On all needles we take the stitches into 2 groups. We knit together the last 2 stitches of the first group on one needle with knit pattern, then we do the same with the last two stitches of the next group. We make the same process on each needle. (so twice on a needle = 8 times in a row) 2 rows K.

Row 20: we repeat row 17. Row 21: K. Row 22: we repeat row 17. Row 23: K. Bow 24: we repeat row 17 Row 25: 1 K. We decrease until there are only 8 stitches on the 4 needles. We pull into these the yarn with a hook and cast off the stitches. FINISHING: we crochet the upper part of the tutyi with one row of simple crochet, then with one row of picot.
