Pendleton Cowl by Star Athena: A Tribute to Classic Pendleton Blanket Designs in Knit Form

Size: One Size Circumference, Length: 48 inches (122 cm) around.5 inches (12.5 cm) wide. Yarn: Lace-weight yarn in four colors that gives you proper gauge. Sample shown: Malabrigo Lace [100% Baby Merino Wool; 470yd per 50 gram skein]; colors: Water Green (MC), Butter, (CC1) Glazed Carrot (CC2), Black Forest (CC3): Less than 1 skein each. Cowl uses approx 753 yards and 80 grams of yarn in total: 310 yards and 33 grams of Water Green,273 yards and 29 grams of Butter, 85 yards and 9 grams of Glazed Carrot, and 85 yards and 9 grams of Black Forest. Needles: 1set US #3/3.25mm 32" circular needle (magic loop) OR two 24" circulars OR 8" circular needle OR double pointed needles, or size to get gauge. Notions: Stitch markers, tapestry needle. Gauge: 34 sts/38 rows = 4" in stockinette st. NOTE: Gauge is not critical. Inspiration: An Oregon institution since 1863, Pendleton Woolen Mills sets THE standard for fine wool blankets and clothing. This cowl is a tribute to the designs and patterns found in classic Pendleton blankets. Make it traditional and knit it in vintageinspired colors, or make it modern with a contemporary palette. The Pendleton style is timeless! NOTES: This medium-level pattern is worked in the round with four colors. It includes stripes and charted stranded Fair Isle-style colorwork. The cowl starts with a provisional cast on, is a knit in the round as a tube,then grafted together at the end. Start Cowl:

With MC CO 96 sts using a provisional CO of your choice. Sample cowl was constructed using a crochet chain method\*. Divide evenly between needles and join to begin working in the round, being careful not to twist sts when joining. NOTE: Carry unused yarn up the inside of the cowl as you knit. Sections longer than 1 inch (2.5 cm), twist unused yarn with working yarn behind work at beginning of row. To avoid puckered stitches in your knitting, do not pull stitches too tightly as you knit. Legend: Light Blue = Water Green Red =Glazed Carrot Yellow =Butter Brown =BlackForest Grey = No stitch indicated. Repeat the color chart and ignore these squares.

Finishing:

Break all yarns except MC. Weave in ends on the inside of cowl. Graft provisional CO together withlast round worked using kitchener stitch. Block well to even out colorwork as desired.
