HAIKU

MATERIALS
1 X 50g Twilleys Freedom Echo DK About 10 yards of contrast yarn (I used Rowan Pure Wool DK in shade 36) Set of 4mm (US 6) dpns Crochet hook for vertical stripes (I used a size 4mm [US 6/G])
GAUGE
My gauge was 18 stitches and 24 rows to 10cm and my hand is 10cm across on the widest part. This is a rib and therefore stretchy. However, if you find the stitch amount I used too small (or big) just add (or take away) an extra K2 P1 stripe for roughly every 2cm needed.
PATTERN
Using 4mm dpns, cast on 36 stitches with Twilleys Freedom Echo DK. Divide the stitches evenly over your needles and join to knit in the round. Work in K2, P1 rib for 47 rounds. \*For right mitten - work 6 stitches in waste yarn at beg of round. Return the knitted stitches to the left needle and knit them again using the working yarn. Complete round. Work 8 more rounds. Join contrast yarn and work one round, knitting every stitch. Castoff. For left mitten - Work as for right mitten until \*. Work round as normal until last 6 stitches. Work these stitches with waste yarn. Return them to the left needle and knit them again using the working yarn. Work 8 more rounds. Join contrast yarn and work one round, knitting every stitch. Cast off. Work Thumbs - (both the same). Unravel the waste yarn carefully and put the stitches on 2 dpns. You should have 6 stitches on the lower needle and 5 on the upper. Using a third needle, knit the six stitches on the lower needle, pick up and knit 2 stitches between the two needles, knit the 5 stitches on the upper needle and pick up and knit 2 stitches in the space between the two needles on the other side. You will have 15 stitches. Join and knit in the round for 10 rounds. Cast off. Sew in all ends. Stripes - Using your crochet hook and contrasting yarn crochet your vertical stripes as follows. I crocheted 3 stripes to the outside of each mitten but you can add stripes in any of the purl channels. My stripes went in the 4"h, 5"h and 6"h purl channel from the thumb. Make a slip knot and hold the yarn behind the mitten. Insert the crochet hook through the bottom purl stitch and into the slip knot. Pull the slip knot through to the front. Insert the crochet hook into the second stitch and hook up a loop of yarn from behind the mitten then pull it through to the front and through the loop there. Repeat until you reach the top. Cut the yarn and pull it through the top loop. Sew in the ends.
