PROMENADE STOLE
Design by Vicki Mikulak Supplies: Fingering weight yarn (800 yards) Size 5 $(3.75\;\mathrm{mm})$ knitting needles Ring markers Crochet hook Size: Unblocked - 15" x 62" Blocked - 20" x 72"

Please read all instructions before you begin. The stole starts with the edging, picks up stitches along it for the body, and finishes by knitting the edging and binding off body stitches as you go. Read charts right to left for right side (Rs) rows and left to right for wrong side (ws) rows. Ws rows are shaded. Edging chart only shows one WS row. Crochet cast on 11 stitches. Knit 1 row; then begin edging chart in garter stitch (knit every row). Slip the first stitch of each row purlwise for ease in picking up stitches for the body. Knit the edging chart 13 times; then knit 1 more row. Bind off all but the last stitch. Keep it on your needle while you pick up only the front loop of each slipped stitch on the edging (79 sts). Knit the first row through the back loops; then begin the chart for the stole body in stockinette. Knit RS rows and purl ws rows except for the first 5 stitches on each end which are knit on every row. Knit the body chart 16 times; then knit 2 rows. Slip the first stitch from the knitting needle onto a crochet hook. Use it to crochet cast on 11 stitches for the second edging. You will have 79 body stitches and 11 edging stitches on the needle. (A marker between the body and edging sts for a row or two can help.) Knit 1 row; then begin the edging chart. On WS rows knit the last edging stitch together with 1 body stitch (k2tog), binding off 1 stitch for every 2 edging rows. Knit 13 edging repeats; then knit 1 row. All body stitches should have been used. Bind off remaining stitches. Pull yarn through last stitch. Weave in ends. No edging option: Cast on 79 stitches. Knit 5 rows, purl 1 row, then begin the body chart. Instead of knitting 16 body repeats, you may wish to knit 17-18 to make it long enough. Knit 5 rows. Bind off loosely or use a stretchy lace bind off method. Beading option: You will need 200 size 6/0 beads and a size 13 (.85) mm crochet hook. Where a bead is indicated in the chart, knit that stitch. Place a bead on the crochet hook and slide it over the stitch.
Blocking instructions:
Soak stole in warm water for 15 minutes. Roll in a towel; gently press out excess water. Lay stole out and pin along one edge (or thread a blocking wire through it and pin into place). Repeat on other side stretching the lace open. Pin the edging points out. Let dry completely before removing pins.
Lace Knitting Tips:
Use knitting needles with sharp points for ease in working decreases. You may wish to place a ring marker between the border and body. If you'd like to do the same for the body, mark off the chart every 10 stitches with a highlighter pen. Place markers on your needles at these locations. This can help you find and correct any problems as you go. When your stitch count is off the most likely problem is a missed yarn over or passing a slipped stitch over. For a missed yarn over, pick up the yarn between the stitches where it should be and place it on your needle. If you forgot to pass a stitch over, do so before you knit the next row. Don't worry, any tightness will block out. Relax and enjoy knitting!
