Size

The newborn-size blanket is given. It should come out about 22 inches wide x 30 inches long (56 x 76 cm). This is a great size for a car seat or stroller. If a larger size is desired, just make your beginning chain an additional 18 or 36 chains, or even more. (Each "V" is 18 stitches, and the turning chain is 3 stitches, s0 start with a number that is a multiple of 18, +3.) Each stripe is two rows. Each "V" of the chevron pattern is about 31/2 inches across (9 cm). and about 21/2 inches tall (6.5 cm).

Crochet terms

Please note that there are many, many knit and crochet demonstration videos at www.youtube.com. If you are an absolute beginner, you should consider searching there for videos about chaining and making the basic stitches, and practice how to hold the yarn to get the tension right. I always advise consulting the Internet to google any term you are not sure about. Videos always pop up in the search results. So, dc = double crochet, where you yarn over, insert the hook, pull a loop through, yarn over and pull through the first 2 loops, yarn over and pull through both loops. 3dctog = a decrease of 3 double crochets together, working over 3 stitches. So, yarn over, insert the hook in the first stitch, pull a loop through, yarn over, insert and pull through the first 2 loops, repeat this in the next 2 stitches, then make the final yarn over and pull through all the loops on the hook. In this pattern, there are two sets of decreases at the bottom of the chevron, and two sets of increases at the top of the chevron. The increases are done by making 3 dc in one stitch.

Color Changes

You may elect to carry the yarn up the side, since all the beginning and ending is done on the same side. I prefer to cut the yarn, leaving 6 inches or so to work with, and thread my large-eye sewing needle with the tai of the color I just finished with, and send it under the stitches of the same color for a couple of inches, and ther trim it even with the work. I then crochet over the new-color end on the first row of the color change. Either way, keep in mind that the right way to change colors is to do the final yarn-over with the next color.

Instructions

With I hook, chain 111 loosely. Switch to H hook. Row 1: Make 2 dc in the 4th chain from the hook, \* dc in the next 5 chains, 3dctog, 3dctog, dc in the next 5 chains, 3 dc in the next chain, 3 dc in the next chain \*, repeat until 17 chains remain. Then, dc in the next 5 chains, 3dctog, 3dctog, dc in the next 5 chains, 3 dc in the last chain. Row 2: Chain 3, turn. (The turning chain counts as a dc.) Make 2 dc in the first stitch, dc in the next 5 stitches, 3dctog, 3dctog, dc in next 5 stitches, 3 dc in the next stitch, \* 3 dc in the next stitch, dc in the next 5 stitches, 3dctog, 3dctog, dc in the next 5 stitches, 3 dc in the next stitch \*, repeat across. Please note: The last 3 dc must be done into the top of the turning chain, which this pattern counts as a dc. If this is too difficult for you, try starting again, this time on Row 1 making 3 dc in the 4"h chain from the hook. Then you will have a dc to make those last 3 dc into. Then on every row, start with 3 dc instead of 2 dc in the first stitch. Change to the other color, and repeat Row 2 twice, down and back. Change back to the first color, and repeat Row 2 twice, down and back. And so on, until your blanket has reached about 30 inches long, ending with the color you started with. Weave in the beginning and ending ends.
