HAT
Cast on 35 (40) sts. Join, being careful not to twist sts, and place marker for beg of rnd. Rnd 1 Knit. Rnd 2 Purl. Rep rows 1 and 2 for garter stitch for 11 times more.
Shape crown
Note Change to dpns when there are too few sts on the needle. Rnd 1 \*K3, k2tog; rep from \* around. Rnd 2 Purl. Rnd 3 \*K2, k2tog; rep from \* around. Rnd 4 Purl. Rnd 5 \*K1, k2tog; rep from \* around. Rnd 6 Purl. Rnd 7 \*K2tog; rep from \* around. Cut yarn, leaving long tail. Thread tail through rem sts to close. Make 4"/10cm pompom and attach to top of hat.
