16" US 06 circular needles 16" US 08 circular needles US 08 dp needles Other tools: stitch marker, darning needle Gauge: 16 stitches x 22 rows = 4" square Abbreviations used: k- knit k2tog - knit two stitches together p - purl NOTE: When changing yarn colors in the stripe areas, twist or wrap the two yarns. Drop the 1st yarn, twist the 2nd (new) yarn under the 1st yarn and bring it up to continue knitting with the new yarn. The twist will interlock the two yarns so there won't be get a gap. Adjust the tension of the stitches at the join as needed.
Begin pattern:
1.yarn. 2. Using US 06 circular needles and burgundy yarn, cast on 72 stitches. Place marker to indicate beginning of round and join to begin knitting in the round. Take care to not twist stitches. 3. Knit around. Repeat until 1-1/2" from cast-on. 4. [K1, p1] around. Repeat 5 more rounds. 5. Change to US 08 circular needles. Knit around once. 6. Do not cut cream Attach black yarn and knit each round for 4 rounds. 8. Using cream yarn, knit around 4 rounds. 9. Using black yarn, knit around 4 rounds. 10. Repeat steps 8 and 9. 11. Knit one round using cream yarn. 12. Using black yarn [K6, k2tog] around. - 64 stitches 13. With cream, knit around once. 14. With black, [K5, k2tog] around. - 56 stitches 15. With cream, knit around once. 16. With black, [K4, k2tog] around. - 48 stitches 17. With cream, knit around once. 18. With black, [K3, k2tog] around once. - 40 stitches 19. With cream, knit around once. 20. With black, [K2, k2tog] once. - 32 stitches 21. With cream, knit around once. 22. With black [K1, k2tog] around once. - 24 stitches 23. Continuing with black, k2tog around once. - 12 stitches 24. Cut the yarn leaving at least a 12" yarn end. Using the darning needle, thread the yarn through the remaining 9 stitches; cinch firmly and anchor the yarn. 25. Finishing: Weave in this yarn end as well as any others. Steam or block the hat if desired.
