Thumb:
Place 11 sts from waste yarn or stitch holder onto size 8 needles. Join yarn and pick up 4 - 6 sts around thumb opening. Decreasing only on purl stitches over the next two rounds, continue in lace pattern to 10sts over next two rounds. Thumb round 1: P1, p2tog, place stitch marker (new beginning), ssk, yo, k1, yo, k2tog, p2tog, p1, (p2tog, p2) twice. Thumb round 2: K5, p to end. Thumb round 3: K5, p to end or decrease twice more to 10 sts total. Thumb round 4: K5, p5. Thumb round 5: Ssk, yo, k1, yo, k2tog, p5. Thumb round 6: K5, p5. BO in pattern using size 9 needle. Weave in all ends and enjoy!
NOTES:
\*To increase for a Womens' Large; CO 38 sts. Change the ribbing to (K5, p2) twice, (K5, p3) three times. When you transition to the lace pattern, you will do three lace patterns [as (K5, p2) twice, k5, p3] on the top and the remaining glove stitches will be the same as written. This will allow you to do the thumb gussetsaswrittenoverthep3stitches. \*Some people may find the thumbs a bit tight, knit on size 8 needles. Increase to size 9 needles if you generally knit tight or want to ensure a fit for just about anyone. BO with size 10 needles, if you make this adjustment. \*If knitting two at a time, knit the left hand mitt first, then the right hand mitt, to allow the thumb gusset stitches to be easily removed.
