It makes a very good last minute gift, as it takes only few hours to knit. Since it has two right sides, the chances that the reciever willike it are doubled. For the best outcome, use a yarn without knots. To knit this hat you have to know or learn the following technics: cast on, knit, purl, purl two together, knit two together, slip a stitch purlwise with yarn in back, knit through the back loop.
Instuctions:
Using cable cast on (or your preferred method to cast on), cast on 56/60/60/64/64/68 stitches and join in round. R1: [knit 1, purl 1] 28/30/30/32/32/34 times. Repeat 1st round 5 more times, or until the ribbing is long enough for your taste. R7: [slip 1 stitch purlwise while holding the yarn behind it, purl 3] 14/15/15/16/16/17 times R8: [knit 1 through the back loop, purl 3] 14/15/15/16/16/17 times Repeat rounds 7 and 8 until your work measures 15/16/16/17/17/18 cm/ 5.9/6.3/6.3/6.7/6.7/7 inc 0R 4 cm/1.6 inc less than the desired lenght. Finish with R7. Decreases: R1: [knit 1 through the back loop, purl 2 togeter, purl 1] 14/15/15/16/16/17 times R3: [knit 1 through the back loop, purl 2] 14/15/15/16/16/17 times ch purlwise while holding the yarn behind it, purl 2] 14/15/15/16/16/17 time :5: [knit 1 through the back loop, purl 2 together] 14/15/15/16/16/17 times R6: [slip 1 stitch purlwise while holding the yarn behind it, purl 1] 14/15/15/16/16/17 times R7: [knit 1 through the back loop, purl 1] 14/15/15/16/16/17 times R8: [slip 1 stitch purlwise while holding the yarn behind it, purl 1] 14/15/15/16/16/17 times R9: [knit 2 together through the back loop, just like you used to knit 1 through the back loop but now stock your needle through the purl stitch next to it to0 and knit them together] 14/15/15/16/16/17 times R10: cut the yarn and with a help of a tapestry needle or crocjet hook pullit through the stitches in the same direction you knitted them (clockwise), pull them as close together as you can so that no hole is left at the top, secure the yarn and work it in.
