When the Dog Bites
Okay, so there aren't any biting dogs around here. But I've recently had a heck of a time with some more complicated patterns, and needed something quick and simple to ease my knitting blues. And, who knows? Maybe Julie Andrews would have counted a warm, knit beanie as one of her favorite things. I certainly do. Yarn: Thick-and-thin handspun, 60 yds. Needles: US ? / 7.0 mm straight needles Gauge: Roughly 3.5 sts ${}=1$ inch Size: 19 inches (21 inches) This is, more or less, a mindless pattern. The only trick is deciding, ahead of time, how you're going to graft the two sides together. You can either use a provisional cast-on, finishing with the kitchener stitch or three-needle bind off - Or, you can, like I did initially, forget that you'll need to graft and just seam the two ends together with mattress stitch after casting off. It's your call. Cast on 27 stitches. 1. Knit to end 2. Knit to 26 sts, turn (your yarn should be at the back of your work after you've turned) 3. Knit to end 4. Knit to 24 sts, turn 5. Knit to end 6. Knit to 22 sts, turn 7. Knit to end 8. Knit to 20 sts, turn 9. Knit to end 10. Knit to 18 sts, turn 11.Knit to end 12. Knit to 16 sts, turn 13. Knit to end 14. Knit to 14 sts, turn 15. Knit to end 16. Knit all stitches 17. Knit all stitches When I first finished this hat and tried it on, my husband commented," Cute, but it Vooks smal!" He was expecting a cozy hat that covers the ears, not a shorter beanie. If you're like my husband and Prefer longer, warmer hatS, you Can Cast on more Stitches (say, 3l or 33) and follow) [the basic pattern Concept: For instance] if you've cast on 33 sts, your row two will be" Knit to 32 Sts, turn" and your row) four will be"knit to 30 sts, turn" etc.] until you're back at where the pattern directs you. questions? I\`m Linnea on Ravelry, email gschuy@yahoo.com (please put Something] Knitterly in the Subject line), or drop d note at http:/ /lackofalltrades .com Repeat rows 2-17 six (seven) times more - if you choose to graft the two sides together using mattress stitch, bind off on the 17th row.
