6 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch and 8 stitches per inch in cable rib pattern, unstretched. You can fudge a little bit on the gauge, by the way, because this cap, done in wool, is quite stretchy.
Alreniationo:
K-knit; P-purl; K2tog-knit two together; P2tog-purl two together; c2-turn cable (slip two stitches to cable needle, hold in back of work, knit next two stitches; knit stitches from cable needle)
Duretiomo:
With circular needle, using the long-tail or cable method, cast on 98 stitches. Join carefully Begin pattern: K2, P2, K2, P2, K4, P2-repeat this fourteen stitch pattern to end of round. Place marker, if you wish. Knit, following established pattern, for six rounds. Cable turn round: K2, P2, K2, P2, C2. Repeat to the end of the round. Continue kniting this patten, turning your cables every 7" round, until the hat measures approximately5 inches. Begin the crown decreasing on a cable turn round by knitting each cable as follows: Slip 2 stitches to cable needle, drop to back of work, Knit next two stitches together, Knit the two stitches from cable needle together-2 stitches decreased. At the end of the round you will have 84 stitches left. Knit two rounds. Second decrease round: K2, P2tog to end of round-63 stitches remain. Knit one round. Third decrease round: K2, K2tog, $^{\star}\mathsf{K}\mathsf{1}$ , K2tog, repeat from\* to end of round (your last K2tog will incorporate the first stitch of the round) to end of round-42 stitches remain. Knit one round. Next decrease round: K2tog to end of round-21 stitches remain. Continue K2tog until you have four stitches left. Knit these stitches in i-cord for 1.5 inches. Break thread, leaving about $^{2"}$ , and thread through the four stitches. Knot the i-cord at the crown, pulling the $z^{\mathfrak{p}}$ tail through the knot as shown (or you can leave the i-cord sticking straight up, if you prefer a bit of whimsyl):

Tack down well. Wet block, being careful not to over-stretch the ribbing. The hat will look skinny and long, but is quite stretchy and will fit baby wel!
