Yarn: 2 colors of worsted weight yarn A loose-fitting hat knit with a high contrast decorative band of color. Looks complex, but is simple to knit using slip stitches. Size: Child or preteen Completed hat measures 9.5" from top to bottom and 15" around ribbed band (unstretched) The sample hat was knit using a total of 73 grams of Premier Yarns' Deborah Norville Everyday Soft Worsted (100% acrylic, 113 grams/203 yards/skein): 59 grams of the main color (black) and 14 grams of the contrast color (wild blue). Needles: US 05 and 07 circular needles, plus US 07 double pointed needles Other tools: stitch marker, tapestry/darning needle Gauge: 18 sts x 23 rounds = 4"

Begin pattern:
Using the US 05 circular needle and the MC, cast on 88 sts. Taking care to not twist the stitches, join to begin knitting in the round. Place marker to indicate the beginning of round.
Bottom Band
[K1, p1] around. Repeat until ribbing measures 2.5" from the cast-on edge. Knit one round. 1fb, k43] twice - 2 sts increased - 90 sts on the n
Body of Hat
Change to US 07 and knit one round with MC. Attach CC but do not cut the MC. Leave a 6" yarn end of the CC that will be woven in when the hat has been completed. The decorative portion of the hat is knit alternating MC and CC rounds. 1. With CC, knit a round. 2. With MC, knit a round. Repeat these 2 rounds twice more. Knit 1 more round of MC. 1. With CC, [k1, sl1pw] around. 2. With MC, knit around 3. With CC, [sl1pw, k1] around 4. With MC, knit around. Repeat these 4 rounds for 2", ending with a round of MC. Knit another round with MC. 1. With CC, knit a round. 2. With MC, knit a round. Repeat these 2 rounds twice more. Cut the Cc, leaving a 6" yarn end to be woven in later. With MC, knit another round.
Crown of Hat (decreases)
Change to double pointed needles when the number of stitches are too few to work comfortably on the circular needle. 1. [K7, k2tog] around - 80 sts remain 2. Knit around 3. [K6, k2tog] around - 70 sts remain 4. Knit around 5. [K5, k2tog] around - 60 sts remain 6. Knit around 7. [K4, k2tog] around - 50 sts remain 8. Knit around 9. [K3, k2tog] around - 40 sts remain 10. Finishing: Cut the yarn leaving at least a 12" yarn end. Using the darning needle, thread the yarn through the remaining 10 stitches at least twice; cinch snugly and anchor the yarn. Weave in all the yarn ends. Steam or block the hat if desired.
