A lovely pair of lacey socks with a kooky heel gusset that expands on the bottom of the foot. These socks are knit from the toe up, Instructions are written for knitting on two circular needles.
Materials:
350 yds fingering weight sock yarn (sample uses Claudia Hand Panted Yarns, Fingering Weight $100\%$ Merino, Shells on the Beach colorway) 2 Circular needles size O, for small, size $1~\%$ for med/large, or size needed to obtain gauge. · Stitch markers · Tapestry needle Size: Woman's Small (US size 6-7) or Med/Lg (US size 8 - 10) Gauge: For size Small: 36 stitches x 54 rows $=4$ inches For size Med/Lg: 32 stitches x 48 rows $=4$ inches
Pattern Notes:
C3R - slip 1, k1, yo, k1,lift slipped stitch over 3 stitches just completed C3L - k1, yo, k1, slip 3 stitches just completed back onto left hand needle, lift fourth stitch on left needle up and over 3 stitches just moved, slip 3 stitches back onto right needle
DIRECTIONS:
Toe: Using Judy's magic cast on, or the cast on of your choice, cast on a total of 24 stitches, 12 on each needle. Row 1: knit all stitches Row 2: On needle 1, K1, M1, knit to last stitch, M1, K1. Repeat on needle 2. Repeat these 2 rows until you have 34 stitches on each needle for a total of 68 stitches. Knit all stitches.
Foot:
Set up row: On needle 1, P1, K3, P1, K24, P1, K3, P1. On needle 2, knit all stitches. Begin pattern. You will work the pattern across needle 1 and knit all stitches on needle 2. Row 1: p1, k3, p1, k2tog, yo, k2, k2tog, yo twice, ssk, k2, yo, ssk, k2tog, yo, k2, k2tog, yo twice, ssk, k2, yo, ssk, p1, k3, p1. Row 2: p1, C3R, p2, k2, k2tog, yo, k1, p1 (in double yo from previous row), yo, ssk, k2, p2, k2, k2tog, yo, k1, p1 (in double yo from previous row), yo, ssk, k2, p2, C3l , p1. Row 3: p1, k3, p1, k2, k2tog, yo, k4, yo, ssk, k4, k2tog, yo, k4, yo, ssk, k2, p1, k3, p1. Create Gusset:
After 4 repeats of pattern on needle 1 (approx. 1/3 of the length of the bottom of the foot), begin to create the gusset on needle2. Round 1: Work lace pattern across needle 1, on needle 2, k15, m1, pm, k4, pm, m1, k15. Round 2: Work lace pattern across needle 1, knit all stitches on needle 2. Round 3: Work lace pattern across needle 1, knit all stitches on needle 2. Round 4: Work lace pattern across needle 1, on needle 2, knit to marker, m1, slip marker, k4, slip marker, m1, knit remaining stitches Repeat rounds 2 - 4 until you have a total of 66 stitches on needle 2.

Turn the heel:
Round 1: k44, k f&b, k1, w&t Round 2: p25, pf&b, p1, w&t Round 3: k23, kf&b, k1, w&t Round 4: p21, pf&b, p1, w&t Round 5: k19, kf&b, k1, w&t Round 6: p17, pf&b, p1, w&t Round 7: k15, kf&b, k1, w&t Round 8: p13, pf&b, p1, w&t. Needle now holds 74 stitches. Round 9: knit all stitches knitting each wrap with the stitch it wraps. On needle 1, work next row of lace pattern
Heel Flap:
Working on needle 2 only, k53, knitting each wrap with the stitch it wraps, ssk, turn. Round 1: Slip 1, p32, p2tog, turn Round 2: (Slip 1, k1) 16 times, ssk, turn Repeat rounds 1 & 2 until all side stitches have been picked up ending with 34 stitches on needle 2. Begin working in the round again continuing in lace pattern as established on both needles. When cuff is $1/4$ inch less than desired length and ending on Row 8 of lace pattern, work 6 rounds in garter stitch (one row knit, one row purl). Bind off using EZs sewn bind off.
