Ribbed Striped Beanie

by Gralina Frie A quick knit combining two basic rib stitch patterns. Knit on large needles with an easily memorized pattern - this is the perfect TV knit for your male friends this fall. It'll take no more than two - three at the most - TV knit sessions to finish. Just four short tails to weave in and you're done! Use up that last skein of your last FO - one skein is enough!

Materials:

Yarn A: 75-100m of Aran/worsted weight yarn or the double amount of DK weight yarn doubled. Yarn B: For the stripes you'll need far less, perhaps 30m, of contrasting coloured yarn I used about 150m/165yrd of Donegal from Lang Yarns: 483 (gray) and a rest of some plain black DK wool for the stripes. Both yarns held doubled throughout the entire knitting. Needles: US 8 - 5.0mm circular or DPN needles, or size needed to obtain gauge. Tapestry needle. 4 stitch markers. Gauge: 16 sts to 10 cm/ 4" with 5.0mm needles over Stockinette sts. Size: to fit head size 55-60cm. Finished measurements: Circumference cast on edging 53cm (unstretched) and length 23 cm. Abbreviations: k=knit, p=purl, st(s)=stitch(es), stockinette sts=knit 1 row, purl 1 row (only needed for gauge swatch), k2tog=knit 2 together, p2tog=purl 2 together, PM=place marker

PATTERN

With yarn A and Us 8 - 5.0mm needles, cast on 84 stitches. Join in a round, being careful not to twist your stitches. Work 10 rounds of 1x1 rib (k1,p1), starting with k1,p1, = about 3.5cm/1.5". Change to a 2x2 rib (k2,p2), starting with k2,p2, and work 6 rounds.

Stripes:

\*Work 3 rounds with yarn B. Change back to yarn A, work 3 rounds. Repeat from \* 2 more times. Carry the non-working yarn along the inside of the hat; break yarn B when you've finished the last of the 3 stripes, leaving a tail for weaving. The hat measures about 15cm/6" from cast on edge. Next round is a set up round before decreasing for the crown: \*Work 21 sts, PM\* repeat from \* until end of round. Work raglan decreases for the crown as follows: K2tog at all knit-knit, knit-purl or purl-knit decreases, unless you have a purl-purl decrease - then work a p2tog. This won't give you a fancy rib crown, but it is totally okay, easy to remember and quick. It works for me. Round 1: = \*work 2tog (beginning with k2tog), work in 2x2 rib until 2 sts before marker\* repeat 3 more times = 4 sts decreased = 70 remaining sts. )und 2: Work even (work the stitches as they appear - i.e. knit k sts and purl p sts Repeat from round 1 until you have 7 sts left between each marker = 28 sts. Now skip the even rounds and work just decrease rounds (round 1) until you have 4 sts left. Cut yarn and pull taut twice, using a tapestry needle, through the live remaining stitches. Weave in the ends.
