Des Chaussettes Intemporelles Timeless Socks
I got inspired to knit lace socks, after looking through a small pile of fabulous books of sockpatterns. Still I struggled to make a fitting lace to match my ideas.. Then after a few trips here and there, with fantastic nature and arcitecture, my brain spat out this simplelace pattern. Credits go to my boyfriend who named the socks, and was supportive allthrough my many frantic Knitting evenings. Size: 38-40 woman's feet. Size can be changed by playing around with yarn, gauge, pattern repeats, and different size needes. This sock is knit from the toe up, in the round, on 5 dpn's. There is shaping for the ancles, but if you prefer you can skip this and just knit in pattern till desired length. It will have a looser fit around the ankle if so. I found it to be a nice snug fit with the shaping. If you would like very long socks, it might be neccesary to increase some stitches when you come to a certain point on your leg.
Materials used:
-80 gr. of crochet cotton, (The one I used was labeled "No5". 5 meters weighs 1.2 gr) -5 dpn's, 2mm thick. -white elastic bands for sewing into the upper edge. -Blunt + sharp needle with suitable thickness, and scissors. ou need the sharp needle for stitching together the ends of the elastics before sewing it into the top edge of the sock.) Gauge: 10\*10 cm stockinette stitch = 36 st and 51 rows
Abbrevations:
yo - yarn over k1 - Knit one ssk - slip, slip, knit these two together s3k - slip 3, knit these 3 together k2tog - knit 2 together k3tog - knit 3 together p1 - purl one
The Pattern:
Cast on 40 st. -Separate onto 2 dpn's if one prefer this for making the toes. Make the toes, stockinette st. only: Round 1: Purl all stitches till the last stitch. Turn work Round 2: Knit all stitches till the last stitch. Turn work. Round 3: Purl all stitches till the last 2 stitches. Turn work Round 4: knit all stitches till the last 2 stitches. Turn work Round 5: Purl all stitches till the last 3 stitches. Turn work. Round 6: Knit all stitches till the last 3 stitches. Turn work. --Okby now youve got it. Keepgoing like this, leaving one more stitch each time, tillyouve left 12 stitches on each side. Jou've made the top-side of the toes now. Knit backandforth again, picking up one, 1, stitch tillyou're backto 40 on the needes, and the toes have shaped. While picking up it can be agood idea to pickup one of the strands between the last knittet stitch and the one you're picking up, then knit the stitckyou're picking up, then pass the strand-stitch over as to close the gap a bit. This tecnique works well for me. -Now you have to pickup 40 stitches along the edge of the toes, making sure to get the new stitches as evenly divided as possible. There should be 80 stitches in total now, divided on 4 needles (20\*4). The new stitches you just picked up will be the upside of the foot. This is where the lace pattern starts, so the edge will not show. If you leave it on the under side, you will see it clearly, and feel it. -Start the lace pattern, starting with a k1, and ending with a k1. After 20 st in the 1st round of the lace pattern, pickup one stitch purlwise. This will make a decorative "hole" on the middle of the upside, and is neccesary for the lace pattern. Lace pattern for "upside" of sock: Row 1: kl, yo, ssk, k2tog, yo, kl, p1. End w k1. Row 2: Knit. Make sure to not twist the p1 from the last row when knitting it. Row 3: yo, k1, ssk, k2tog, kl, yo, p1. End w yo. Row 4: Knit.
Heel:
Knit in lace pattern till you are 4.5 cm from the tip of your heel. Start the heel in the same way as the toe; Knitting 39 st, turn -Purl 38 st, turn -Knit 37 st, turn -Purl 36 st, turn --Keep going like this till there is 10, ten, "loose" stitches on each side. Then pickstitches up, knitting back and forth till all the stitches are picked up. .If you have a very pointy heel, you might want to do a couple more rounds, leaving 12 stitches on each side before picking up again. In the first round after the heel, you have to pich up 1 stitch in 3 places, 3 stitches allin all, to make the number of stitches match with the lace patterns. Pickup these stitches at the end of each knitting needle with only 20 stitches on. After the first lace pattern repeat, with picking up these stitches, which will make up the purl stitch in the lace patterns, you should have 84 stitches allin all. Knit 3 repeats of lace pattern after the heel is completed, start the pattern on the backside of the sock above the heel.
Lace pattern after the heel:
Row 1: yo, k1, ssk, k2tog, k1, yo, p1 Row 2:Knit Row 3: k1, yo, ssk, k2tog, yo, k1, p1 Row 4: Knit. (At the end of the sock this row is included in the 6 plain stockinette stitch rows. As in you only knit 6 rows after the last row of lace.) Decrease rounds (completed in 1 pattern repeat, 4 rounds) The decrease rounds are described knitting needle by knitting needle, as to keep trackof where to decrease, as the decreases are done in the sides.
Decrease round 1:
Ist knitting needle: -yo, s3k, k2tog, kl, yo, p1. Then continute in normal pattern out this kn. needle. 2nd knitting needle: -Knit in normal pattern till 7 stitches remail on this needle: yo, k1, ssk, k3tog, yo, p1. 3rdknitting needle: -yo, s3k, k2tog, kl, yo, p1. Continue in normal pattern out this kn. needle. 4thknitting needle: -Knit in pattern til 7 stitches remain: yo, k1, ssk, k3tog, yo, p1 Now there should be 20 st on each needle, 80 all in all
Decrease round 2:
1st knitting needle: -ssk, knit the rest of the stitches on this needle. 2nd knitting needle: -Knit till only 2 stitches remain on this needle, k2tog. 3rd knitting needle: -Same as for 1st knitting needle 4th knitting needle: -Same as for 2nd knitting needle Now there should be 19 stitches left on all needles, 76 stitches all in all.
Decrease round 3:
1st knitting needle: k1, knit in lace pattern. 2nd knitting needle: Knit in lace pattern till last 2 stitches, k2tog 3rd knitting needle: Same as for knitting needle 1 4th knitting needle: Same as for knitting needle 2 Now there should be 19 + 18 + 19 + 18 stitches left on the needles, 74 stitches all in all
Decrease round 4:
1st knitting needle: k2tog, knit the rest of the stitches on this kn needle. 2nd knitting needle: knit till last 2 stitches, ssk. 3rd knitting needle: Same as for knitting needle 1 4th knitting needle: Same as for kniting needle 2 v there should be 18-17-18-17 stitches left on the needles, 70 stitches all in al -Knit 6 pattern repeats more, allin all 10 pattern repeats after the heel. -Knit 6 rounds stockinette stitch. Then making the picot edge: 1 round of p2tog, yo. Note: Using purl 2 together to makes it pop out when you fold it over. Then knit 5 more rounds of stockinette stitch, and bind off using Russian bindoff. (K2, put these 2 st backon needle, knit these together. \*Knit 1, knit the 2 knitted st together. \* repeat till done.) Measure for a snug stretchy fit, and cut 1 cm longer ofa 1 cm broad white elastic band, overlap the ends and stitch together thoroughly so it will hold. Fold picot edge over, place elastic band inside and sew shut. Weave in ends. Blocking not needed for this particular one. I also think blocking would mess up the size and durability of these socks, as they're made to fit with out blocking.
