Sox on the Beach

I really enjoy playing with yarns that stripe! The lace adds just a bit of fun, sparkle, and playfulness. So, grab a pitcher of your favorite umbrella drink, sit in the sun, and enjoy some "Sox on the Beach!"

Knit with Berrocco Sox (440yds/100gm) #1454 Size: Woman's small ( $7^{\prime\prime}$ ankle), med (8" ankle), large ( $\;^{9^{\prime\prime}}$ ankle)
Materials
100 gm fingering weight sock yarn US size 1 ( $(2.25\;\mathsf{m m})$ for small/medium or to knit to gauge US size 1.5 (2.5mm) for large or to knit to gauge Stitch Markers Tapestry Needle
Gauge:
9.5 sts/inch & 14 rows/inch in stockinette for small/medium sizes 8.5 sts/inch & 12 rows/inch in stockinette for large size
Finished size for medium:
$7\;3/4^{\prime\prime}$ leg circumference, blocked and relaxed 7 $1/2"$ foot circumference, blocked and relaxed $6^{\prime\prime}$ leg length
Notes
For large size, knit the medium size with US size 1.5 $(2.5\mathsf{m m})$ needles. When two numbers are given, the first applies to the small size, and the second to the medium size. The size of the sock can be adjusted by using a smaller or larger needle for a different gauge.
Abbreviations
sl- slip as if to purl, unless otherwise noted k2tog/p2tog- knit/purl 2 stitches togetherssk- slip 1 stitch as if to knit, slip another stitch as if to purl. Cuff:
Loosely cast on 66 (77) stitches. Join, being careful not to the twist your stitches. Place marker to indicate beginning of round. Round 1: p Round 2: k Round 3: p Rounds 4-9: \*k1, p2,k2,p1, k2, p2, k1; repeat from \* to end of round. Round 10: p Round 11: k Round 12: p Begin leg.
Leg:
Work rounds 1-12 of lace pattern 5 times or until leg measures approximately 5 inches or 1 inch less than desired length; ending on round 12. Work rounds 1-10 once more. Set-up for heel, part 1: k33 (36), PM to indicate beginning of heel flap. K33 (38), PM to indicate end of heel flap. Slip remaining 0 (3) sts to left hand needle. These will become part of the instep stitches. 33 (39) instep sts/33 (38) heel flap sts. Heel: will be worked over 33 (38) sts. Place remaining 33 (39) sts on a holder for instep. Heel flap is worked back and forth. Set-up for small heel, part 2: Row 1: (wrong side): k Row 2: slip 1, k2tog, k2, yo, k1, yo, k1, ssk, ssk, k2tog, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, ssk, ssk, k2tog, k2tog, k1, yo, k1, yo, k2, ssk, k1. 31 sts. Note: Heel flap stitches have been decreased by 2 sts. Row 3: slip 1, p across to end of row. Set-up for medium heel, part 2: Row 1 (wrong side): k Row 2: slip 1, k3, yo, ssk, ssk, k2tog, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, ssk, ssk, k2tog, k2tog, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, ssk, ssk,k2tog, k2tog, yo, k4. 34 sts. Note: Heel flap stitches have been decreased by 4 sts. Row 3: slip 1, p across to end of row. Eye of Partridge heel: Row 1 (right side): slip 1, \*k1, slip 1; repeat from \* to last (2) 3 stitches, ending with k2 (3). Row 2: slip 1, p across to end of row. Row 3: slip 1, k1, $\ast\mathsf{k1}$ , slip 1; repeat from \* to last (3) 2 stitches, ending with k3 (2). Row 4: slip 1, p across to end of row. Repeat rows 1-4 until heel flap measures 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 inches or desired length, ending on row 1 or 3 Turn Heel: Row 1: slip 1, p17 (21), p2tog, p1, turn. Row 2: slip 1, k6 (9), ssk, k1, turn. Row 3: slip 1, p7 (10), p2tog, p1, turn. Row 4: slip 1, k8 (11), ssk, k1, turn. Continue working one more stitch until all the stitches have been worked. You should end on a knit row with 19 (22) stitches remaining. Do not turn work. Begin gusset. Gusset: Pick up and knit one stitch in each slipped stitch along side of heel. PM to indicate start of instep. Purl 33 (39) stitches to next marker. Pick up and knit same (one less) number of stitches along remaining side of heel. PM to indicate end of instep. Knit 10 (11) stitches and place marker. The beginning of the round is now the middle of the heel. Set-up for small instep: Knit to first instep marker. Slip marker, work 33 instep stitches in lace pattern for instep. Slip marker. Knit to end of round. 33 instep sts. Set-up for medium instep: Knit to first instep marker. Slip marker, k1, ssk, work next 33 instep stitches in lace pattern for instep, k2tog, k1. Slip marker. Knit to end of round. 37 instep sts. Note: Instep stitches have been decreased by 2 sts. Gusset decreases: Round 1 (decrease round): Knit to last 3 stitches before first instep marker, k2tog, k1. Slip marker, k0 (2), work next 33 instep stitches in lace pattern for instep as established, k0 (2) to next marker. Slip marker, k1, ssk, knit to end of round. Round 2: Knit around as established (pattern stitches on instep and stockinette on sole). Repeat these two rounds until 64 (72) stitches remain. 33 (37) instep sts/31 (35) sole sts Foot: Continue working as established (lace pattern on instep and stockinette on the sole) until foot measures 2 1/2 to 3 inches less than desired foot length. End on round 2 of lace pattern.

Set up for small toe:
Round 1: knit to first instep marker. Slip marker, k2tog, k2tog, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, ssk, ssk, k2tog, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, ssk, ssk, k2tog, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, ssk, ssk. Slip marker, knit to end of round. 31 instep sts/ 31 sole sts. Round 2: knit to first instep marker. Slip marker, p1, k8, p2, k9, p2, k8, p1. Slip marker, knit to end of round. Round 3: k Round 4: knit to first instep marker. Slip marker, p1,k8, p2, k9, p2, k8, p1. PM to indicate new beginning of round.
Set-up for medium toe:
Round 1: knit to first instep marker. Slip marker, k2, k2tog, k2tog, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, ssk, ssk, k2tog, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, ssk, ssk, k2tog, k2tog, yo, k1, yo, k1, yo, k1, ssk, ssk. Slip marker, k to end of round. 35 instep sts/35 sole sts. Round 2: knit to first instep marker. Slip marker, k2, p1, k8, p2, k9, p2, k8, p1, k2. Slip marker, k to end round. Round 3:k Round 4: knit to first instep marker. Slip marker, k2, p1, k8, p2, k9, p2, k8, p1, k2. PM to indicate new beginning of round. Continue to knit even until foot measures 1 1/2 inches less than desired foot length.
Toe:
Decrease round: k1, ssk, knit across to last 3 stitches before first marker, k2tog, k1. Slip marker, k1, ssk, knit across to last 3 stitches before next marker, k2tog, k1. Work decrease round once, knit 3 rounds even. [work decrease round once, knit 2 rounds even] twice.[work decrease round once, knit 1 round even] 3 times. Work decrease round only until 22 sts remain. Use Kitchener st. to graft toes. Weave in all loose ends.
