Intricate Knitting Pattern: A Multicolored, Repeating Design with Varied Stitches

Beaded Peacock Capelet June 2009

Pattern illustration

ABOUT THIS SHAWL: I designed this shawl as I went along, so writing this pattern took almost 3 months. I'd been having a real desire to do something peacock-y in terms of color for about year and did some spinning along those lines, but maybe this was what I was really going for all along? My “feathers" are quite stylized and if you look at a real peacock feather, the colors aren't accurate at all. But I had fun, and you could really get creative with bead color placement, just make sure you buy enough to start with (but hey, beads are cheap). It looks good on almost any body type and accommodates a wide range of body sizes. Colors: You could do it in black yarn with silver beads for evening wear or try a blue or rose color way with complementing beads and turn the “feathers" into anemones, or skip the beads altogether-a kettle dyed yarn might work well for that. Note that there is no fastening at the neck to hold this shawl closed, you don't need it to wear this comfortably, but you could certainly add a tie threaded through under the collar or a single clasp at the neck. Size: Women's small/ medium / large

How to knit on a bead:

CHART1 Checker edging, 6 sts. X 1 at each edge

1) Knit stitch to be beaded (it will be on the right hand needle). 2) Impale the bead onto a crochet hook small enough to fit through the hole of your bead. 3) Slip the stitch to be beaded off the needle and onto the crochet hook, with the hook facing you. 4) Pull the loop through the bead, making sure the stitch is still loose enough to knit for the next row (this wil take some getting used to). 5) Replace the stitch loop onto the left needle if necessary.
