Hip Happening Handspun Handwarmers ; Fat Cat Knits Fibers- models are spun with Polwarth in Sweet Tortie and Nerc

You will need: Approx. 3 oz Worsted Weight Yarn Double Pointed Needles Size 3mm or 3.5 mm 2 Stitch Markers, Tapestry Needle, Waste Yarn Bells or Charms (optional) Gauge: Womens 21sts =4" Mens 20 sts= 4" Please note: directions for Mens size are in brackets. Directions for I-cord style in bold With 3 mm (3.5mm) DPN's, using the thumb or long-tail method, cast on 40sts onto one needle and distribute the sts as follows: Needle 1-12 sts , Needle 2- 16 sts and Needle 3- 12 sts. Join into a round, marking the beginning of the round, and being careful not to twist, work 28 rnds of 2 x 2 rib (K2,P2) across round. Next round: Knit all sts. Next round: (For I-cord style)- K1 \*YO, K2tog. Repeat from \* to last st. K1. Next 5 rounds: K all sts. @ 2011 Twisted Traditions by Lorraine Condotta Set up thumb gusset: K17 sts. Place marker. Increase 1 st by backward loop, K1, and increase another st. Place marker. Knit to end of round. K2 rounds without increasing. Next round: Knit to first marker, slip it, increase one st as before, K3, increase, slip marker and knit to end of round. Continue to increase between the markers every 3rd round, until you have 17 sts between markers. Knit another round. Next round: Knit to first marker, remove it, slip 17 thumb gusset sts onto a spare piece of yarn, remove second marker. Cast on 1 stitch, and continue to knit to the end of the round. You have 40 sts on the needles. or desired length for hand. Work 7 rounds of K2 P2 ribbing, and cast off in rib Work thumb sts: With DPN's, slide first 8 sts onto the first needle, 9 sts onto a second needle, and pick up 5 sts (including the one you made in the center) onto the third. Re-attach yarn, and knit across first and second needles. K2 tog, K1, K2tog on 3"d needle. Next round: K 8 sts on first needle, K8 sts on second needle, and transfer last st to 3rd needle, and knit these. 20 sts. Next 2 rounds: Knit all sts. Work 3 rounds of K2, P2 ribbing, and cast off in rib. Darn in yarn ends neatly.
I-Cord Style
With DPN, cast on 3 sts. \*Slide sts to the right end of the needle, and knit 3 Repeat from asterisk, until you have approximately 20" of cord. Cast off. With Tapestry needle, thread through yarn end, and thread through loops in the mitten, as shown. Attach bells , charms or pom-poms, and darn in loose yarn ends.
