River's Becnie: A Simple Top-Down Infant Hat Knitting Pattern for Newborns

River's Becnie

An Infant's Hat

Pattern illustration

Shown here in Flynn on Wexford Merino Silk by Three Irish Girls I wanted an easy, simple skullcap for my newborn son, River, and I wanted it to fit for his first couple of months, at least. A gorgeous, soft yarn combined with top-down construction yielded the perfect infant hat. Fold cuff up for younger babes, leave cuff down as your wee one grows! This hat is worked in the round from the top down.

Materials:

Approximately 65 to 85 yards worsted weight yarn [I used 65 yards for mine. Your mileage may vary.] Size 7 $(4.5\;\mathrm{mm})$ knitting needles, or size needed to give you gauge, knit in the round Size 4 $(3.5\;\mathrm{mm})$ ) knitting needles, or needle size $1.0\:\mathrm{mm}$ smaller than needle used to achieve gauge Sewing needle to weave in ends Gauge: Worsted weight: 5 stitches and 7 rounds per inch in stockinette, unblocked, on larger needles
