There are two methods of construction - Provisional Cast -On which starts at the body of the hat, and Long Tail Cast-On from the outer edge of the brim. To fit: child aged about 12 months; head circumference 46 cm/18 inches. Yarn Required: 90 yds of aran weight yarn. Gauge: 20 sts = 10 cm/ 4" on 5 mm/US 8 needles or size required to meet gauge.

Abbreviations

k - knit st/s - stitch/es Rnd - round k2tog - knit 2 sts together - decreases by one st. M1 - make a new stitch by picking up the running strand between sts and knitting into the back of it.

Option 1 - Provisional Cast-On

Provisionally cast on 90 sts. Join in the round place marker. Knit every round until work measures 7.5 cm/3 inches from cast on edge.

Crown Shaping

Rnd 1: (k7, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd. Rnd 2 & each alternate rnd: knit all sts. Rnd 3: (k6, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd. Rnd 5: (k5, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd. Rnd 7: (k4, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd. Rnd 9: (k3, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd. Rnd 11: (k2, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd. Rnd 13: (k1, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd. Rnd 15: (k2tog) repeat to end of rnd. Rnd 17: (k2tog) repeat to end of rnd. Rnd 18: knit all sts. Cut yarn leaving a 25 cm/10 inch tail, thread through remaining crown sts and weave in excess on wrong side.

Brim

Place provisional cast on sts on needles ensuring that you have 90 sts (increase or decrease if needed). Place marker for beginning of the round. Ensure the right side of work is facing you. Rnd 1 & each alternate rnd: knit all sts. Rnd 2: (k9, M1) repeat to end of round. Rnd 4: (k10, M1) repeat to end of round. Rnd 6: (k11, M1) repeat to end of round. Rnd 8: (k12, M1) repeat to end of round. Rnd 10: (k13, M1) repeat to end of round. Rnd 12: (k14, M1) repeat to end of round. Rnd 13: knit all stitches. Total 150 sts. Bind off loosely knitwise. Weave in loose ends. Block.

Option 2 - Longtail Cast-On

Cast on 150 sts using longtail cast on method. Join in the round and place marker. Purl one round. Rnd 1: (k13, k2tog) repeat to end. Rnd 2 & each alternate rnd: knit all sts. Rnd 3: (k12, k2tog) repeat to end. Rnd 5: (k11, k2tog) repeat to end. Rnd 7: (k10, k2tog) repeat to end. Rnd 9: (k9, k2tog) repeat to end. Rnd 11: (k8, k2tog) repeat to end. Rnd 12: knit all sts. Total 90 sts. Knit every round for a further 7.5 cm/3 inches.

Crown Shaping

Rnd 1: (k7, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd. Rnd 2 & each alternate rnd: knit all sts. Rnd 3: (k6, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd. Rnd 5: (k5, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd. Rnd 7: (k4, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd. Rnd 9: (k3, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd. Rnd 11: (k2, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd. Rnd 13: (k1, k2tog) repeat to end of rnd. Rnd 15: (k2tog) repeat to end of rnd. Rnd 17: (k2tog) repeat to end of rnd. Rnd 18: knit all sts.
