suggested yarn:

1 (1, 1, 1, 2) skein(s) Beyond Basic Knits Prima Superwash Sock Yarn (420 yds / 384 m per 3 % oz /100 g skein; 80% Superwash Merino Wool, 20% Nylon) in Sunflower or Granite. NOTES These socks are worked from the cuff down in an easy to memorize, yet interesting to knit, ribbed cable pattern. They look equally at home on both male and female feet of allsizes. Don't panic at the mention of cables--this design uses a simple technique that won't even require a cable needle. There are two heel options: a traditional, sturdy slipped-stitch heel, and a more decorative version where the cable pattern continues down the heel fap. You choose which you'd like!

Divide for heel

Work 1 (3, 1, 3, 1) st(s) in pattern. The next 24 (28, 32, 36, 40) sts will become the heel fap—-place these on one needle to be worked back and forth. The remaining stitches are the instep and will be used later. At this point, decide which style heel you would like: the more traditional and sturdy slipped stitch, or the stretchier and decorative cabled heel which is a continuation of the leg stitch pattern.
