Simple Harf Long Hat / Scarf Combo
Original Pattern designed by Jeannie Phillips Adapted (with permission) for the Kiss Loom by Carina Barron Ravelry:cece72 email: ccbarron72@gmail.com
Items Needed for this project:
Loom: Kiss Regular Slim 2 Way Adjustable Loom configured with 54 pegs and 4 washers, set up in the round Yarn: Bulky ( #5) or Super Bulky (#6) weight yarn Note: The sample above was made with Bernat Chunky Ombres in the color Intrigue (jumbo ball with 300g/275 yds) and all of the yarn was used for the hat and corkscrews. Since everyone will finish their hat at different lengths and with different embellishments, yardage is only an estimate. The weight category for this particular yarn is a #6, however I do not find it as bulky as that may seem. I've knit with Lion Brand Hometown UsA (a super bulky yarn too) and it was much thicker. The Bernat Chunky is nice and soft. I find it softer than the Bernat Softee Chunky. Yardage: Varies, depending on length of finished item. Above sample used 275 yards of Bernat Chunky Finishing Touches: You can finish this hat off with an oversize pompom, a large tassel, or some corkscrews. Other embellishments could be a flower near the brim and smaller ones sprinkled along the length of the item. You can also do some purl rows to add some texture as well. Get creative!!
Stitch Knowledge:
ewrap cast on (or your preferred cast on for hats) continuous U stitch Purl Decreasing stitches Drawstring bind off Key: K = continuous U stitch P = purl DEC = decrease a stitch on both sides, move slider end in
Instructions:
Knitting in the round. egs. We will start with the brim and hat portion of this project for rows 1-45. Row 1: K1 P1, repeat to end of row Rows 2-11: Repeat row 1 Rows 12-45: K all pegs/rows (in continuous U-stitch) Row 46: DEC by 2 pegs and move end board in, K entire row treating two loops as one on the pegs with thedecrease Please Note: When knitting the 2 stitches over, it's best to do one at a time so you can pull the yarn slack out of each stitch. Test each loop and see which one pulls easier than the other. The one that's easier is the one you want to knit off first (while pulling the slack out) then knit off the remaining loop on that peg and continue on. This will keep the tension and knitting smooth and seamless. Row 47-55 (9 rows): K all (continuous U stitch) Rows 56 to the end of your decreases: You now have a 10 row repeat (decrease/K round followed by 9 knit rows). Repeat these 10 rows until you have 1/3 of your stitches left on your loom (18 stitches if you casted on 54 to begin with). Once you have 1/3 of your stitches remaining: Continue to knit (without any further decreases) until the scarf measures as long as the person is tall. I typically make mine anywhere from 4 feet to 5.5 feet long. Seriously. :) The sample hat (on the first page) fit a small 8 year old up to a big headed 45 year old (thanks Hubby!). If you need to adjust your pegs to make your hat smaller or larger, please do so. Then simply follow the pattern and decrease until 1/3 of your stitches remain. From that point, knit every round (no decreases) until your desired length is obtained.
To make a large tassel (courtesy of Jeannie Phillips)
For the tassel in the hat below, Jeannie used a magazine the size of a Readers Digest to wrap her tassel. Then, attach the tassel to your beautiful hat!
