LTYC Basic Fingerless Mittens

Materials: 1 skein of Malabrigo worsted weight yarn 210 yards (This can make 2 pair) approx 100 yards per pair Needles: Size 5 dpn or size to obtain gauge- set of 4 Other: 2 stitch markers, scrap yarn for stitch holder, tapestry needle Gauge: 5 st = 1" Cast on 36 stitches evenly over 3 needles. Cuff ribbing: K2, P2 for 20 rows After your last ribbing row k one complete round. Shape thumb gusset:K1, place marker (this marker is end of round and should be a different color than the next 2).(This is the beginning of the round.) Knit 17, place marker, K2, place marker of the same color. Knit to the end of the round. This is your thumb gusset. -Knit to stitch marker, slip marker, knit in front and back of the next stitch( kfb), knit to the stitch just before marker, knit in the front and back of that stitch. Slip marker, Finish knitting round. -K 3 rounds without increases. Increase every 4th round. Do this 4 times until there are 12 stitches between markers. -K one round. -On next round place 12 thumb gusset stitches on scrap yarn then complete round. -K 9 more rounds, on the 10th round decrease 4 stitches evenly across work. You should have 32 stitches. --- -Work K2, P2 rib for 7 rows. Cast off loosely. Thumb: Place sts from stitch holder on three needles. Add yarn and pick up 2 sts in the V between your thumb and first finger. Knit 7 rounds for thumb. Cast off loosely. Note: Be sure when you add yarn to leave a tail to sew up hole at inside base of thumb. Weave in ends. Make a second mitten to match.
