Tension/ gauge
16 sts, 22 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch on 5 mm (US 8) needles, using doubled 8 ply yarn. Before you begin - check that your tension is correct. In order to obtain an accurate measurement, work a tension swatch 4 sts and 4 rows larger than the required tension. Measure the central 10 cm square: if you have fewer sts than the required tension, use smaller needles or your tea cosy will be too big. If you have too many sts, use bigger needles or your cosy will be too small.
Abbreviations - read before starting work
cast on, cable method = place right needle between last 2 sts to make next st (instead of into the stitch as if to knit) k= knit p =purl st = stitch st st = stocking stitch: knit right side rows, purl wrong side rows k2tog = knit 2 sts together: decreases a st with a right slant sl1 = slip a stitch, as if to purl, but just transfer to right needle rpt = repeat
Volcano - make 2 pieces, then join into one
With 5 mm (US 8) needles and doubled 8 ply in earth colours, cast on 36 sts (leaving 50 cms yarn for sewing later). Knit 4 rows. Work 20 rows of st st, beginning with a knit row. Place the 36 sts on a stitch holder and break off yarn leaving 50 cm for sewing later. Make a second piece the same as the first, only do not break off yarn. Row 25. knit the36 sts ofthe second piece, replace the 36 sts from stitch holder to needle, and knit across these sts too = 72 sts. You now have a gap for the spout. Row 26. p72 Row 27.k1, (k8, k2tog) x7,k1 = 65 sts Work 3 more rows st st Row 31. k1, (k7, k2tog) x7, k1 = 58 sts Work 3 more rows st st Row 35.k1, (k6, k2tog) x7, k1= 51sts Work 3 more rows st st Row 39. k1, (k5,k2tog)x7, k1 = 44 sts Work 3 more rows st st Row 43. k1, (k4, k2tog) x7, k1= 37 sts Work 3 more rows st st Row 47. k1, (k3, k2tog) x7, k1 = 30 sts Work 3 more rows st st Row 51. k1, (k2, k2tog) x7, k1= 23 sts Row 52. purl Break off earth colours yarn leaving 75 cm end for sewing. Change yarn to 1 strand of red 8 ply and 1 strand of orange 8 ply used together. Row 53. k1 (sl 1, k1) x 11 Row 54. p3 (sl1, p3) x5 Row 55. k1, (k1, k2tog) x7, k1 = 16 sts Work 3 more rows st st beginning with a purl row. Continue, as follows, to make 2 "lava flows": Row 59. cast off 4 sts, p8, knit to end Row 60. cast off3 sts, knit to end = 9 sts Note: the st st pattern has now changed sides, so the next row is a wrong side row Row 61. p9 Row 62.k5,turn, place last 4sts on a stitch holdert be worked later. Row 63.p5 Work 10 more rows st st on 5 sts Row 74. k3, k2tog Work5 more rows st st on 4 sts Dou Qn l2toa l2 Work 7 more rows st st on 3 sts Row 88. k2tog, k1 Work 9 more rows st st on 2 sts Row 98. k2tog, break off yarn (leaving 50 cm for sewing later), pull through last st. Rejoin red/orange double yarn to work the 4 sts left on holder. Repeat as above from row 80 to end.

Embellishments
Crochet spirals separately, in single yarn, in red, yellow and orange. Length and number of these are up to you - sample has 3 in yellow of differing lengths and 2 each of orange and red.
Spirals
With single 8 ply yarn and 3 5 (US 4) or 4 mm (US 6) crochet hook, make a chain of 25 - 40 sts in length. Work 3 double crochets (US single crochet) into each chain, bind off.
Finishing
Using red or orange yarn, sew seam at top of volcano cosy, where yarns changed. Volcano Tea Cosy Sew lava flows in a wavy line down each side of cosy - use one of the 2 strands of yarn left for sewing at each side. Sew a 3 cm seam (in earth colours) up from the cast on edge of the main part, on the handle side (row ends), and a 4 cm seam below the spout. Go to top of earth colour section and sew down to approx 11 cm above the end of the lower seam, leaving this space for the handle (alter this as your teapot requires). Thread wire through some or all of the foundation chain of the crochet spirals to stiffen them (omit if young children are around). Sew spirals inside top edge opening of the volcano and arrange them so that they all wind around each other, to fll the top and spill over the sides.
