Well Tempered Baseball

Suggested Yarn: Approximately 50 yards of any worsted weight yarn, for example Lily Sugar'n Cream Cotton, or double-thread thinner yarn accordingly. Yarn must be microwaveable (no metallic threads) and washable for use as a home remedy (hot-cold-pack). Read instruction below carefully regarding the use as hot-and-cold-pack! PossibleColors:CI WhiteC2Red Needles: US size 4 (3.5mm) needles and a yarn needle. Other Material: Dry corn, beans, lentils for the flling, or small hot-and-cold gel packs, which remain flexible when frozen (one or two). Beans have been used successfull for the samples and are hence recommended for this toy. A cotton liner is optional. Gauge: Not important for this project, use needles at least 3 sizes (2mm) smaller than weight suggests. Skill Level: Ambitious beginner. In C1 CO 6 sts with long tail or other method. R1: Purl all sts (WS). R2: slk, m1, k4, m1, k1 (= 8 sts) (RS). R3: slp, purl all sts. R4: slk, m1, k6, m1, k1 (=10 sts). R5: slp, purl all sts. R6: slk, knit all sts. Join the two parts using all four tails: Attach the CO tail of the first stripe to the middle part of the second stripe with two stitches (see photo on the right). Attach the BO tail of the first stripe to the other side of the second stripe likewise. Proceed in the same manner with the tails of the second stripe attaching it to the first stripe. You can weave in the ends, but you may also just leave them inside the toy. Use a thread of C2 on a yarn needle to apply the seam: Attach thread to one of the stripes on the inside of the toy. You may tie it to one of the tails. Hold the two stripes together, so the edges are aligning. Step 1: Lead the needle from the inside to the outside through a chain edge stitch on one edge (see photo). Step 2: Lead the needle from the inside to the outside through a chain edge stitch on the other edge (see photo). Repeat step 1 and 2 until the seam is almost closed. Fill the body with filling material of your choice - make sure it's microwaveable for use as hot-pack. Close the opening completely. To wash the hot-cold-pack the seam needs to be reopened, hence: Double or triple the very last stitch to make the end of the seam obvious. Pull the end into the toy.

Use as hot-and-cold-pack
Hot: Put the toy in a clean bowl. Microwave for approximately 30 seconds, depending on the strength of your microwave. Increase heat incrementally to make sure that the toy doesn't get too hot. Be especially careful, if you used synthetic yarn: Don't use as hot-pack at all, if yarn behaves suspiciously when heated! Cold: Leave the toy in a clean bowl in the freezer over night, but at least for 30 minutes to cool. For extra safety, you can use a 4x4" cotton liner bag (sewn from t-shirt fabric) to prevent filling material from escaping, if you want to give this toy to a toddler. @ Sandra Ronca Designs - all rights reserved.
