Helical Wristlets

Women's Medium (can be made to fit any size) These wristlets are a great first project in helical knitting. Helical knitting is a method of knitting in the round that doesn't show where the beginning of the round is (except for the cast-on and -off rows, sadly, but you can hide that by carefully weaving in the tails). These are sized for a women's medium, but you can make them literally any number of stitches and rows you want, with any yarn and needles, depending on the size you want to make. They are a great stash-buster since they require less than a skein of each yarn. Difficulty: Beginner Skills: Knitting in the round, helical knitting Materials: Cascade Yarns Heritage 150 in color 5626 (electric blue) Knit Picks Swish DK in Dove Heather Size US 3 double-pointed needles (set of 4) Yarnneedle For women's medium, cast on 36 stitches in grey yarn. Do not divide onto more than one needle. Slide the stitches back to the other side of the needle and knit a row with the blue yarn. Now divide the stitches onto three needles, pick up the grey yarn from the row below, and continue knitting around. This joins the stitches into a round. Continue to knit all rounds, alternating between one round of blue and one round of grey. After a few rows, you should not be able to see where you switched colors. Continue in this manner until you reach the desired length, ending with a grey row. Then loosely bind off in grey and weave in all ends. The cast-on row will naturally stretch more than the bind-off row, so you will probably want to wear them with the cast-on row closer to your hand. The pair in the picture is made to be 6 inches (15 centimeters) long, but you can make them any length you want. They can be worn closer to the thumb to keep your hands warm or lower on the wrist. You could even make them very large and wear them as leg warmers if you wanted.
