Stay Put Shawl

Designers: Lisa Kartus Maureen Mueller Skill level: advanced beginner Go with the simple sturdy version in aran weight yarn and one seam, as knit by Lisa. Or try Maureen's version using doubled lace-weight mohair+silk, with ribbons to close it and beads to decorate the cable. It's a fun, slightly addictive knit. And for those of us in colder climates, you can wear these lovelies under a coat. Finished measurements: Approx. 23" wide by 52" around

Yarn:

Aran: approx. 700 yards aran weight. Shown in Cascade Ecological Wool (100% undyed Peruvian Highland wool, 250 g = 478 yards), color 8049. Ribbons & Beads: approx. 1200 yards lace-weight mohair silk worked double. Shown in Elann Silken Kydd (70% kid mohair, 30% silk; 25 g = 232 yards), color 24 Cranberry. Needles and stuff: Aran version: U.S. 10.5 Ribbons & Beads version: U.S. 10 cableneedle optional: 300 size 6/0 glass seed beads optional beading crochet hook: 1.o0 mm tapestry needle Gauge: Aran version: 14 sts and 18 rows = 4"/10 cm on U.S. 10.5 needle after light blocking. Ribbons & Beads version: 16 sts and 24 rows = 4"/ 10cm on U.S. 10 needles after blocking.

Knit Notes for both versions:

C8F: slip 4 sts to cable needle and hold in front (F) of work, k4, then k 4 sts from cable needle. C8B: slip 4 sts to cable needle and hold in back (B) of work, k4, then k 4 sts from cable needle.

To knit aran version:

CO 84 sts. 12-row pattern repeat: Rows 1, 5, 7, 11 (RS) : k28, p4, k20, p4, k 8. Rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 (WS): p 28, k4, p20, k4, p28. Row 3: k28, p4, k4, C8F, C8F, p4, k28. Row 9: k28, p4, C8B, C8B, k4, p4, k28. Work 12-row repeat approx. 19 times or until unblocked piece measures approx. 50", ending with a row 12. BO loosely in pattern. Block lightly: make sure piece is wet through, lay out flat and pat into rectangular shape that it wants to be anyway. Allow to dry.

Seam:

With right sides facing, pin one short edge to the bottom of one long edge. Hold it up by what should now look like the neckline. If one bottom end seems to turn into a point, then you've got it right. Seam using either backstitch, as shown on model, or mattress stitch. Weave in ends.Edaes will curl under.

To Knit Ribbons & Beads version:

To keep the edges from curling under, throughout the body of the shawl the first three sts of every row are going to be worked sl 1 st purlwise, k2 the last three sts of every row will be knit. Adding beads: for how-to, see Video Glossary at www.ahamomentknits.com Bead placement: add bead to each cable cross as follows: for C3F, add bead to the 2nd of the four sts you knit from cable needle; for C3B, add bead to the 3rd of the four sts you knit from left needle. CO 84sts. Eyelet edge for ribbons: Knit 2 rows, sl first st in each row purlwise. (RS) eyelet rows: sl 1, k1, (yo, k2tog, k8) 8 times, yo, k2 = 85 sts. (WS): sl 1, k2, p2tog, p to last 3 sts, k3 = 84 sts. Body 12-row pattern repeat: Rows 1, 5, 7, 11 (RS): sl 1 purlwise, k29, pm, p2, k20, p2, pm, k30. Rows 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12 (WS): sl 1 purlwise, k2, p27, sm, k2, p20, k2, sm, p27, k3. Row 3 (RS): sl 1, k29, sm, p2, k4, C8F, C8F, p2, sm, k30. Row 9 (RS): sl 1, k29, sm, p2, C8B, C8B, k4, p2, sm, k30. Work 12-row pattern repeat for body 13 times. Now it's time to work eyelets on the long side that will match up with eyelets on the short bottom side. Work Row 1 of each of the next 8 pattern repeats as follows: sl 1, k2tog, yo, work in pattern to end. After working a total of 21 pattern repeats (13 without eyelet edge, 8 with eyelet edge), finish with: (RS): sl 1, k2tog, yo, k to end. (WS): sl 1, k to end. BOknitwise. Block shawl. Weave in ends. Fold shawl, matching eyelets on the long side edge with the eyelets on the short edge. Tie with ribbons.
