LITTLE CABLE SOCKS
MATERIALS
ABBREVIATIONS
Knitters/tapestry needle for sewing in ends and seams.
GAUGE
C4F = cable 4 sts forward C4B = cable 4 sts backward K= knit K2tog = knit 2 sts together P= purl P2tog= purl 2 sts together PU = pick up pw = purlwise rep = repeat ssk = slip, slip, knit Approx 30 sts and 42 rows to 10 cm in stocking stitch on 2.5mm knitting needles.
TO FIT
Foot Circumference: 21.5cm [8.5"] (24cm, [9.5"]). Length of the leg is determined by desired length of the sock and foot is determined by the length of the wearer's foot.
STITCHES & TECHNIQUES:
C4F: slip next two sts onto a cable needle and hold at the front of work. Knit next 2 sts from left needle, now knit 2 sts from cable needle. C4B: slip next two sts onto a cable needle and hold at the back of work. Knit next 2 sts from left needle, now knit 2 sts from cable needle. PU: pick up stitches. Slip point of needle into edge stitch on row, wrap yarn around the needle knitwise, draw the yarn through. Slip, Slip, Knit (ssk): slip 2 sts knitwise, place left needle purlwise into slipped sts in front of right needle, knit both sts together. Kitchener Stitch: with the right side of the sock facing out, break the yarn leaving a length to sew with and thread it onto a needle. Hold the 2 needles parallel. Always keep the yarn beneath the needle as you work. Step 1: Go into the first stitch on the front needle as if to purl and then into the first stitch on the back needle as if to knit. Leave both stitches on the needle. Step 2: Go into the first stitch on the front needle as if to knit, pull the stitch off the needle. Step 3: Go into the second stitch on the front needle as if to purl, leave stitch on the needle. Step 4: Go into the first stitch on the back needle as if to purl, pull the stitch off of the needle. Step 5: Go into the second stitch on the back needle as if to knit, leave the stitch on the needle. Repeat steps 2 - 5 until 2 stitches remain then repeat step 2 followed by step 4.
METHOD
Cast on 64 (72) sts. Round 1-6: \* P1, K4, [P2, K2] 5 (6) times, P2, K4, P1, P1, [K2, P2] 7 (8) times, K2, P1. Round 7: P1, C4F, [P2, K2] 5 (6) times, P2, C4B, P1, P1, [K2, P2] 7 (8) times, K2, P1. Round 8: \* P1, K4, [P2, K2] 5 (6) times, P2, K4, P1, P1, [K2, P2] 7 (8) times, K2, P1. Rep rounds 1-8 another 8 (9) times or until leg is desired length ending with round 6.
Divide for Heel
Pattern across the first 32 (36) sts as per round 7. Then work across the following 32 (36) sts in stocking stitch as follows: Row 1: sl 1 pw, knit to end, turn. Row 2: sl 1 pw, purl to end, turn. Rep rows 1 and 2 another 13 (14) times (28 (30) rows in total).
Heel Turn
Row 1: sl 1 pw, K17 (19), ssk, K1, turn. Row 2: sl 1 pw, P5, P2tog, P1, turn. Row 3: sl 1 pw, K to 1 st before gap, ssk, K1, turn. Row 4: sl 1 pw, P to 1 st before gap, P2tog,P1 turn. Rep rows 3 & 4 until all heel sts have been worked ending with WS row & P2tog, P1. There will be 18 (20) sts remaining. Next Round: K across 18 (20) heel sts then PU 15 (16) sts evenly along side of heel. Pull the cable through and then pattern over next 32 (36) sts as follows: P1, C4F, [P2, K2] 5 (6) times, P2, C4B, P1. Pull cable through and PU 15 (16) sts evenly along side of heel. Knit across 18 (20) heel sts then down the first 15 (16) picked up sts. You are now at the beginning of the round. There will be 48 (52) sts on one side of the cable (these will become the sole sts)and the 32 (36) pattern sts on the other (which are the instep sts). The pattern sts will mark the beginning of the round.
Shape Instep
Round 1: P1, K4, [P2, K2] 5 (6) times, P2, K4, P1, K1, ssk, K to 3 sts before end of round, K2tog, K1. Round 2: P1, K4, [P2, K2] 5 (6) times, P2, K4, P1, K to end of round. Repeat rounds 1 and 2 twice more Round 7: P1, C4F, [P2, K2] 5 (6) times, P2, C4B, P1, K1, ssk, K to 3 sts before end of round, K2tog, K1. Round 8: P1, K4, [P2, K2] 5 (6) times, P2, K4, P1, K to end of round. Rep rounds 1-8 until 64 (72) sts remain.
Instep
Round 1-6: P1, K4, [P2, K2] 5 (6) times, P2, K4, P1, K to end of round. Round 7: P1, C4F, [P2, K2] 5 (6) times, P2, C4B, P1, K to end of round. Round 8: P1, K4, [P2, K2] 5 (6) times, P2, K4, P1, K to end of round. Rep rounds 1-8 until sock foot measures 21cm from back of heel or desired length (5cm shorter than total foot length).
Shape Toe
Round 1: \*K1, ssk, K to 3 sts before the end of the instep sts, K2tog, K1, rep from \* for sole sts.
Round 2: Knit
Rep rounds 1 and 2 until 12 (16) sts rem. Now you are ready to finish your sock.
FINISHING
Graft toe stitches together using Kitchener Stitch. Weave in ends.
