Unwrapping the Legend of Krampus: A Hand-Knitting Guide to Creating the Christmas Monster Companion to Santa Claus

Krampus?

This Krampus is a knitted hand-puppet Santa Claus and his big bag oftoys is a Christmas tradition. We all know that Santa decides who's naughty or nice. But in Central Europe and Scandinavia, Santa has a partner: Krampus, the Christmas Monster.

But, really, who is Krampus, exactly? Santa brings good children the things they like, and Krampus brings naughty children what they deserve. If you've been naughty, Krampus will come to see you on December 5, Krampusnacht (Krampus Night). And he is a fierce and hairy creature with big teeth, and a long, long tongue. The nice children get a visit from Santa Claus the next day: December 6, St. Nicholas' Day. And Santa brings them toys and treats of all kinds. No naughty child wants a visit from Krampus. After he scares them and bawls them out for misbehaving, Krampus loads their Christmas stockings with Iumps of coal. Most households put up a picture or statue of Santa Cruz at Christmas. But you can make a Krampus to go with it! After all, Santa and Krampus are friends: you can't have one without the Other.
