MEZZALUNA WRAP - Workable draft, not in crochet shorthand. date: March 5, 2012 (modified several times since original dated 2/12/1 This draft includes written instructions that still need to be morphed into shorthand. I'll tackle that after tax season. I'm also going to add another border. Please link your project to the Ravelry Pattern Page: Mezzaluna Shawl I recently finished a wrap working directly from this text using a fingering yarn with a 6.Omm hook. That project page is: Mezzaluna (Crescent Moon) Shawl. It blocked out a little bit bigger than I expected, but I really like it. I'm intending to work my next one with a 5.5mm hook. Thanks for giving this a try. Please send me any feedback. Nancy Stitches are American English crochet. Abbreviations used: SC or sc = single crochet DC or dc = double crochet HDC = half-double crochet CH or ch = chain V = v-stitch (double crochet, chain one, double crochet in the same stitch as the first double crochet.) W = w-stitch (this is basically 1.5 v-stitch, worked at the beginning and end of the row as an increase.) SK = skip st = stitch BB or bb = bobble. Use your own favorite bobble, popcorn or puff stitch. If you don't have one, you can try this: Yarn over, insert hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop and bring to the height of your work. Repeat until you have 7 loops on the hook. Yarn over, pull through 6 loops: 2 loops remain. Yarn over and pull through the remaining loops. If you want it puffier, add a chain one at the top. () = number of times to perform an action. May also surround a note. (COUNT: ) = number of stitches in the row. Will not normally include chains or chain spaces. NOTES: Every row increases at the beginning and at the end of the row with what I'm calling a W-stitch, which is basically a one-and-a-half v-stitch. This pattern requires a little patience because you're counting in almost every row. I found it helpful to count where the increases go and mark them before I crochet the row so I don't worry about having to count as I crochet while listening to an audio book or something. Foundation: Note: Chain and Single Crochet to create the foundation row. Chain 61. Turn. Working in the back ridge of the chain (this is the back spine on the reverse side, NOT the back loop), SC in the 2nd ridge from the hook, continuing to the end of the chain. Turn. BORDER:
Note: Single crochet and picot stitches. WORK THE OUTSIDE CURVE FIRST: SC in each stitch until you reach the other tip. CH 1. WORK THE NECKLINE CURVE: Alternate SC and picots until you reach the other tip. I don't see any reason why you shouldn't use your favorite picot and just space them evenly across the shawl. The picture shows a single crochet between each picot. This is the picot described in the pattern:

Picot: SC in the next stitch. Chain 3, insert your hook into the front loops of the SC that you just made (see pictures) above. There will be 3 loops on your hook. Yarn over, pull through all loops. Make a SC in the next stitch, repeat to until you get to the other end.
EDGINGS - THERE ARE TWO VERSIONS. (I'm going to add a third of my own, but these are the ones that are original to the pattern.)
Note: I put a picture of the clover one on my project page in case you need a visual. It's clover attached to the border by chains on either side.
GING #1 - Clover dangles (see note before beginning
With the right side facing, attach yarn at the right side tip. CH 1, SC in the first sc. \*\* CH 11. Slip stitch in the third chain from the hook to create a loop. CH 3, 2 DC in the loop, CH 3, sc in loop. (3 times) CH 10, SK sc, SC in the next sc, CH 3, SK 1, SC \*\* REPEAT FROM \*\* TO \*\* to the end of the row. NOTE: One of the testers made this suggestion: For an easier way to start the clovers, ch 14 (10 ch, + 1 loop, +3 starting ch), dc into 4th ch from hook, dc, ch 3, etc. working into that one ch as your starting loop. Sorry if I'm explaining this badly: it's morning and the tea hasn't hit yet. Basically, instead of making a 3 ch loop, which I find hard as the dickens to work into (YMMV), you're working into a chain, which will expand big enough for ALL the stitches.
