Blooming Rose

INSTRUCTIONS Make Rose
With Rose Color, CO 5 sts. Rows 1, 3, 5: Kfb, k to end. Rows 2, 4, 6: P to last 2 sts, pfb, p1. 11 sts. Row 7: Knit Row 8: Purl Rows 9, 11, 13: K1, k2tog, k to end. Rows 10, 12, 14: P to last 3 sts, p2tog, p1. 5 sts. Repeat rows 1-14 twice. Three small petals made. Do not break yarn, continue as follows: Rows 1, 3, 5: Kfb, k to end. Rows 2, 4, 6: P to last 2 sts, pfb, p1. 11 sts. Rows 7, 9: Knit Rows 8, 10: Purl Rows 11, 13, 15: K1, k2tog, k to end. Rows 12, 14, 16: P to last 3 sts, p2tog, p1. 5 sts. Repeat rows 1-16 twice, three medium petals made. Do not break yarn, continue as follows: Rows 1, 3, 5: Kfb, k to end. Rows 2, 4, 6: P to last 2 sts, pfb, p1. 11 sts. Row 7, 9, 11: Knit Row 8, 10, 12: Purl Rows 13, 15, 17: K1, k2tog, k to end. Rows 14, 16, 18: P to last 3 sts, p2tog, p1. 5 sts. Repeat rows 1-18 three times. Four large petals made, 10 petals total. Finish rose as follows: Row 1: K1, k2tog, k2. 4 sts. Row 2: P1, p2tog, p1. 3 sts. Row 3: K1, k2tog. 2 sts. Row 4: P2tog. 1 st. Fasten off the last stitch and break yarn, leaving a 30-inch tail to sew rose to base.
Make Base
With Base Color, CO 3 sts and work 3-stitch I-cord for 12-inches, or desired length. Turn needle so that working yarn is on your right hand side and beg working back and forth on two double-point needles as follows: Increase rows 1-15: Kfb, k to end. 18 sts. Knit 12 rows (garter stitch). Decrease rows 1-15: k2tog, k to end. 3 sts. Slide 3 rem sts to opposite end of double-point needle and work 3-stitch I-cord for 12 inches, or desired length. Break yarn and thread yarn tail through rem 3 sts. Place a pin on one side of the base to mark the right side.
Make Leaves
Small leaf: With right side facing, pick up three stitches along edge of base next to I-cord, as pictured in Diagram 1. Work back and forth on 2 double-point needles as follows: Row 1 (and all odd-numbered WS rows): Purl Row 2: K1, yo, k1, yo, k1. 5 sts. Row 4: K2, yo, k1, yo, k2. 7 sts. Row 6: K3, yo, k1, yo, k3. 9 sts. Rows 8, 10, 12: Ssk, k to last 2 sts, k2tog. 3 sts. Row 14: Sk2p (slip one st, k2tog, passed slipped stitch over st just made). 1 st. Fasten off last st and break yarn. Large Leaf: With right side facing, pick up three stitches along edge of base next to I-cord as pictured in diagram 1. Work back and forth on 2 double-point needles as follows: Row 1 (and all odd-numbered WS rows): Purl Row 2: K1, yo, k1, yo, k1. 5 sts. Row 4: K2, yo, k1, yo, k2. 7 sts. Row 6: K3, yo, k1, yo, k3. 9 sts. Row 8: K4, yo, k1, yo, k4. 11 sts. Rows 10, 12, 14, 16: Ssk, k to last 2 sts, k2tog. 3 sts. Row 18: Sk2p. 1 st.
Finishing
Secure leaves by stitching one edge of each leaf to the I-cord, as pictured in Diagram 1. With purl side facing outward, pin the large petals along the outside edge of the base. Continue rolling up the rose in a spiral shape and pin in place, finishing with the small petals in the center. Stitch the straight edge of the rose to the base with the 30-inch yarn tail. Weave in all ends. Soak and block well, shaping petals and leaves Voila! A rose as pretty as any you've seen in a garden!
