Directions
CO 24 (32, 40, 48, 56) sts. Divide sts evenly over 4 dpns or the 2 tips of a long circular for magic loop. Join for knitting in the round, and work in k2, p2 ribbing for 8(8, 8, 1O, 1O, 12) rounds. Change to sprout pattern and work until piece measures 2.5 (4.5, 5.5, 6.5, 7.5)/6.5 (l1.5, 14, 16.5, 19) em from cast on edge, ending with round 3 or 9. Make Sprout - k3tog without dropping themoffthe lef needle. Re-knit first st, dropping itfrom leff needle, then re-knit the next 2 sts together dropping them off the needle.
Sprout Written Instructions
Rounds I-5: k all sts. Round 6: \*make sprout over next 3 sts, k5\* to end of round. Rounds 7-1l: K all sts. Round 12: k4, \*make sprout over next 3 sts, k5\* to end of round ending with kl. K 12 (16, 20, 24, 28), placing them on hold. These wil be the top of foot sts. We wil now be working the heel flap sts back and forth in rows over the next 12 (16, 20, 24, 28) sts. If you are using dpns, work all the heel flap sts onto I needle.
Heel Flap
Row I: \*ll, kl\* to end. Row 2: sl I, p all to end. Repeat rows I and 2 a total of 6 (7, 8, 10, 11) times. 12 (14, 16, 20, 22) rows. Now it's time to turn the heel using short rows.
Turn the Heel
Row I (RS): sll, k6 (8, 12, 14, 16) ssk, kl, turn work. Row 2 (WS): sl,p3 (3, 7, 7, 7) p2tog, pl, turn work. Row 3: sll, k to I st before gap, ssk, kl, turn work. Row 4: sll,p to I st before gap, p2tog, pl turn work. Infant size heel turn will be complete after row 4. Other Sizes: Repeat rows 3 and 4 until allheel sts have been worked. 8 (iO, 14, 16, 18) heel sts remain. K across these heel sts. Now we wil be picking up sts along each side of the heel flap and getting ready to work the gusset. Pick up and k7 (9, 11 I3, 15) sts along the side of the heel flap, PM, Work in pattern across the top of foot sts, PM, pick up and k7 (9 ,11, 13, 15) sts along the other side of the heel flap, k4 (5, 7, 8, 9), PM for beginning of round. This marker for the beginning of the round is placed halfway between the sts left over from the heel turn. 34 (44, 56, 66, 76) sts.
Gusset Decreases
Round t: Kto marker, work top of foot sts in patern to next marker, k back to beginning of round marker. Round 2: Kto 3 sts before marker, k2tog, kl, work top of foot sts in pattern to next marker, kl, ssk, k back to beginning of round marker. \*Note: Onsizes infant, chld and mediumarge adult, there are not enough top of fot sts to comlete the last pattern repeat. ese 2 rounds until you have decreased back down to 24 (32, 40, 48, 56) sts. Continue working Round I (no further decreases) until foot measures 3 (5, 6, 7.5, 8.5) inches from the back of the hee or I(1, 1.5, 2, 2.5)/2.5 (2.5, 3.75, 5, 6.5) cm less than desired foot length. Now we wil begin to decrease for the toe (almost done, yay!). To prepare, we must move our beginning of round marker to the top of the foot by shiffing it over 6 (8, 1O, 12, 14) sts from it's current location. Place a second marker 12 (16, 20, 24, 28) after the new beginning of round marker.
Toe Decreases
Round 1: kl, ssk, knit to 3 sts before marker, k2tog, kl, slip marker, kl, ssk, knit to 3 sts before beginning of round marker, k2tog, kl. Round 2: k all sts. Repeat rounds 1 and 2 a total of 2 (3, 3, 3, 4) times. 16 (20, 28, 36, 44) sts. Repeat round I until 12 (12, 16, 16, 20) sts remain. Break yarn leaving an 18" tail. Using tail and tapestry needle, close up the toe using kitchener stitch. and immediately cast on for the second sock to avoid Second Sock Syndrome! -
