A great starting project, the basic granny square is an easy pattern to learn. The pattern uses only the basic crochet stitches.

Yarn

Stylecraft Special DK:

14 colours/15 balls (1 ball of each for the blanket, 1 extra in the border colour): 1005 - Cream 1019 - Cloud Blue 1020 - Lemon 1026 -Apricot 1029 - Copper 1034 - Sherbet 1065 - Meadow 1067 - Grape 1080 - Pale Rose 1081 - Saffron 1099 - Grey 1240 -SoftPeach 1032 - Denim (Border) 1820 - Duck Egg Or approximately 4,500 yards of your own choice of DK yarn. This pattern can be made in any weight of yarn. Just use the appropriate hook size and remember that your yardage requirements will vary. Hook 4mm (G USA)

Pattern Notes

The size and gauge on page two are given as guide but aren't critical as you can just keep adding rows to this blanket until you have the size you are happy with. The only thing you need to do is make sure you keep to an even number or rounds, or the border won't work out nicely. I worked a total of 68 rows for mine and you can follow the colours exactly using the Colour Guide on page 5 if you like. \* If you don't want to change colour at the end of any round, simply make a ss into the corner space then start the next round.

My Classic Granny Square

In Round 1 colour yarn, 4ch, ss to 1st ch to make a loop. Round 1: 4ch, \*3tr into loop, 2ch,\* repeat from \* to \* twice more, 2tr into loop, ss into 3rd ch of starting 4ch. Break yarn and join new colour to corner space. Round 2: 4ch, 3tr into same sp, 1ch, \*(3tr, 2ch, 3tr), 1ch,\* into next sp, repeat from \* to \* twice more, 2tr into starting sp, ss into 3rd ch of starting 4ch. Break yarn and join new colour to corner space. Round 3: 4ch, 3tr into same sp, \*1ch, 3tr in 1ch sp, 1ch, (3tr, 2ch, 3tr) into corner sp, repeat from \* to \* twice more, 1ch, 3tr in 1ch sp, 1ch, 2tr into starting sp, ss into 3rd ch of starting 4ch. Break yarn and join new colour to corner space. Round 4: 4ch, 3tr into same sp, \*1ch, work (3tr in next sp, 1ch) for each sp along the side then (3tr, 2ch, 3tr) into corner sp,\* repeat from \* to \* twice more, 1ch, work (3tr in next sp, 1ch) for each space along the side then 2tr into starting sp, ss into 3rd ch of starting 4ch. Break yarn and join new colour to corner space. Keep working more rounds as given for Round 4, changing colour at the end of each round until you have worked a total of 68 rounds. (Or you have a size you are happy with.)

Border

Join the border colour to corner space. Round 1: 1ch, \*(1dc, 2ch, 1dc) in corner sp, 3ch, (1dc in next sp, 3ch) along side to next corner,\* repeat from \* to \* around the blanket edge to the start sp, ss into top of 1st dc of round. Round 2: ss to corner sp, 1ch, \*3dc in corner sp, 1dc in dc, (3dc in ch sp, 1dc in dc) along side to next corner,\* repeat from \* to \* around the blanket edge to the start sp, ss into top of 1st dc of round. \* Also see Useful Pictures on page 6 for help with the next round. Round 3: ss to next dc [middle of 3 corner dc's], 4ch [counts as 1tr, 1ch], (1tr, 1ch) twice in same st, \*\*skip 1, 1dc in next, \*1ch, skip 3, (1tr, 1ch) 3 times in next, skip 3, 1dc in next,\* repeat from \* to \* along the side of the blanket up to 3 corner dc's, skip 1, (1tr, 1ch) 3 times in middle st of 3 corner dc's, \*\* repeat from \*\* to \*\* around blanket edge to starting corner then, skip 1, ss into 3rd ch of starting 4ch. Round 4: ss into sp, 4ch [counts as 1tr, 1ch], 1tr in same sp, 1tr in tr, (1tr, 1ch, 1tr) in next sp, \*1ch, skip tr and sp, 1dc in dc, 1ch, skip ch and tr, (1tr, 1ch, 1tr) in sp, 1tr in tr, (1tr, 1ch, 1tr) in sp,\* repeat from \* to \* around blanket edge until last dc has been worked then, 1ch, skip sp and tr, ss into 3rd ch of starting 4ch.
