Sweet Mary Jane
THE SWEET MARY JANE
In 1984 my Mother died of breast cancer. That was two decades ago. That mothers, sisters, daughters are still dying of breast cancer saddens us all. The journey into the hospital system with all of the anxieties, stress and isolation is one filled with grief and hope. I have designed this bed jacket as a tribute to my Mother Mary Jane, and to all who have had to take this journey. Since 2007 I have been emailing this pattern to any knitter who has requested it. I do ask that if possible, please send a donation to Yarn Harlot's Knitters Without Borders: http://www.yarnharlot.ca/blog/tsffaq.html The body of the bed jacket is knit back and forth as one piece with the garter stitch border band knit as the same time. The sleeves are knit in the round from the cuffs to the underarm. The sleeves are then joined to the body to create the yoke. The yoke is knit in stockinette stitch ending with an eyelet row and the lace collar. The only sewing is at the underarms. The lace body, sleeves and collar are knit using on strand of lace weight yarn. The cuffs and yoke are knit using two strands of lace weight yarn. All on the same size needle.
Yarn:
The yarn used in the photos is Knit Picks Shadow 100% merino wool, lace weight, 50 gram hank, 402 metres (440 yards) or Any lace weight yarn that fall within the above meters per grams as listed above.
Needles:
Size 4mm (US 6): Circular, 40cm, 80cm (16",32") Size 4mm (US 6): Dpns, set of 5 or two 40cm (16") circulars. Adjust needle size if necessary to obtain correct gauge.

The Sachet:
Aka the test swatch
The Sachet is your test swatch. Please knit, wash and block the sachet. After all, you will then have a small bag to fill with lavender, cedar chips or a nice round bar of scented soap. The jacket is lace; your gauge can't be calculated without washing and blocking. So please take the time knit and block the sachet. Needles: 4mm (#6) double pointed Yarn: 12 grams lace weight yarn CO 54 sts, pm, join being careful not to twist sts. Rnd.1: Knit Rnd 2: Purl Rnd 3: Knit and at the same time pm every 9 sts. Knit lace pattern: Knit yarn over k2tog ssk Repeat lace pattern 3 times Rnd 4: purl, removing markers except for 1" marker Rnd 5: Turn work you will be knitting back the way you just knit, and now using two strands of yarn held together. Next Rnd: \*k1, k2tog\* rep \* to \* to end of rnd = 6sts. Thread yarn through these 6 stitches and tie off. Hand soak, I also add hair conditioner to the wash. Lay the sachet flat and pin the bottom and sides. Pull the lace frill into points above the bag and pin each points. Let dry. Run a ribbon through the holes created by the round of yarn over's and fill the sachet. Tie the ribbon tightly in a bow. The lace portion of the sachet will now hang with the right side showing.

Whipstitch the sleeve underarm edges to the underarm edges of the body.
Washing and blocking:
If you have blocking wires and a blocking board just skip this section. Use a wool wash that does not require rinsing. Soak the bed jacket for 10 to 20 minutes I also add hair conditioner to this soak. Gently squeeze the water out of the bed jacket, and then wrap the bed jacket in a towel. Now place on an uncarpeted floor and walk on it (like stomping on grapes). Place the bed jacket on your bed or carpeted floor and block by laying flat with the front borders overlapping. Pin to desired length and size. Pin the lower lace pattern of the body into points, and the collar should be pinned, ^overhead’ and into gentle points. Remember that the lace needs to be stretched to open up the design. Sew on buttons. I like to use a backing button with lace since it helps to hold the button. Thread ribbon through eyelet holes created in the collar on set up row # 1.
