Toy Pullover or Vest - Seamed by Jan Cullen

This pullover or vest will fit a bear or doll with a height and chest of 41 cm/16 inches. This was designed to fit my children's assortment of Build-A-Bear Workshop toys and Zapf dolls. The top is worked flat from the hem up. Sleeves are optional and worked separately then stitched to the body. Motifs may be knitted as you work or use duplicate stitch to add them later. Charts are in a separate document so you can print only what you need.
Yarn Required
DK weight yarn. Vest: 85 yards. Pullover: 140 yards. Plus a few yards of contrast colour if desired.
Notions
4.5 mm/US 7 circular needles or DPNs 3.75 mm/US 5 circular needles or DPNs Stitch marker Gauge: 20 sts x 28 rows = 10 cm/4 inches in stockinette stitch on 4.5 mm/Us 7 needles.

Body
Cast on 83 sts using smaller needles. Join in the round. Row 1: k3, k1, (p1, k1) 18 times, k4, k1, (p1, k1) 18 times, k2. Row 2: k2, p1, (k1, p1) 18 times, k4, p1, (k1, p1) 18 times, k3. Repeat Rows 1 & 2 twice more for a total of 6 rows. Change to larger needles and work as follows: Row 1: knit to end. Row 2: k2, p37, k4, p37, k3. Repeat these two rounds twice more for a total of 6 rounds. Plain Top: If you prefer a plain top or want to sew the design on later, then continue with the previous two rows for another 14 rows then go to Armhole Shaping. Patterned Top: You will now work on your chart. Row 1: k13, work row 1 of chart, k10, continue in pattern to end. Row 2: k3, p3, k4, p10, work row 2 of chart, p10, continue in pattern to the end. Continue in this manner until the chart is completed, finish at the marker.
Armhole Shaping
e st, k1, k37, k2. Turn work. You will continue on these 41 sts first \*Row 2: k2, p37, k2. Turn work. Row 3: k2, k2togtbl, knit to last 4 sts, k2tog, k2, turn work Row 4: k2, purl to last 2 sts, k2 Repeat Rows 3 & 4 until 31 sts remain.

Neck Shaping
Row 1: k2, k2togtbl, k6, turn work and continue on these 9 sts. Row 2: p7, k2. Row 3: k2, k2togtbl, k2, k2tog, k1. Row 4: p5, k2. Row 5: k4, k2t0g, k1 Row 6, 8 & 10: p4, k2. Row 7, 9: k6 Bind off sts for shoulder. Cut yarn leaving a 20 cm/8 inch tail. With RS facing place next 11 sts on a holder for front of neck. Join yarn and continue as follows: Row 1: k6, k2tog, k2. Turn work and continue on these 9 sts. Row 2: k2, p7. Row 3: k1, k2t0gtbl, k2, k2tog, k2. Row 4: k2, p5. Row 5: k1, k2togtbl, k4. Row 6, 8, 10: k2, p4. Row 7, 9: k6. Bind off sts for shoulder. Cut yarn leaving a 20 cm/8 inch tail.
Body Continued
With RS facing join yarn to back sts and knit across them. Turn work and continue from\* to match front. Join the right shoulder seam.
Neckband
With RS facing and smaller needles, pick up and knit the 8 sts across front left neck, knit across sts on holder for front neck, pick up and knit 14 sts across right neck, knit across sts on holder for back neck, pick up and knit 7 sts across left front neck. Total 51 sts. Work in (k1, p1) rib for 5 rows. Bind off using a stretchy bind off. Sew side seams, sew left shoulder and neckband seam.
Sleeves (optional)
Using smaller needles cast on 37 sts. Row 1: k1, (k1, p1) repeat to last 2 sts, k2. Row 2: (k1, p1) repeat to last st, k1. Repeat the above two rounds twice more for a total of six rounds. Change to larger needles. Row 1: knit. Row 2: purl. Repeat these two rows until sleeve measures 8 cm/3.5 inches or required length. Bind off. Fold sleeve in half lengthwise and sew the long edges together. Sew sleeve to body, matching the seam to the body seam. Weave in ends. Block. Dress your favourite bear or doll.
