Notes
I changed colors in rounds marked with a \$. My color order is as follows: lavender, butterscotch, rich orchid, Kelly green, aqua, butterscotch, lavender, kelly green, rich orchid, butterscotch, aqua My crochet is slightly on the loose side. I've included suggestions to get your square to 12" at the end of the pattern. Photos show round 6 with dtr6tog instead of the written dtr5tog. As you can see below, only two petals actually show the whole dtr6tog. Photos for round 7 show the petals as written: dtr5tog. Since they came out great, I edited the pattern.

Wait, I'm still not at 12"!
If I didn't end at 12," I would grow the square with a round of bphdc or bpdc to get to the proper size (round 16), and I would have done it in butterscotch (to repeat the round 8/9 coloring). Another suggestion to gain more surface area, if needed, would be to use front and back post treble crochet in the basket weave portion of the pattern.
